Meet Ryan Smith

We recently connected with Ryan Smith and have shared our conversation below.

Ryan, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I wasn’t aware about my resilience until when I am in my early twenties. The amount of times that I have been upset or felt like I couldn’t do it, I always remained standing. While I don’t know exactly where I got my resilience, I felt like I had it in my whole life without my awareness.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Aside from me being a sound designer, I also like to go birdwatching and write about my feelings. I also used to be an artist where I draw cartoons of myself, friends, animals, and much more. Nowadays, I find myself not enjoying hand drawn art as much as I used to.

Instead, I’m now focusing on my one talent in sound designing in order to make it easier on myself. I’m mainly doing it as a free hobby, but now that I’m collaborating with other creators, I am receiving payment for my work. I am hoping to make it into a future career when I’m ready and able to make it a living.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I find myself to be introverted, hardworking, and persistent. I’m not as social and only have a small group of friends. I am okay with this since a few of them have autism, like myself. While I am hardworking, my body has to let me know when enough is enough and has to rest. This can lead to procrastination, but slowly and surely, I will find a way to change my habits and become active again.

My advice to anyone who can develop during their journey is to let your curiosity wander. Let it find a special interest in whatever activity you do that is beneficial to you and to your community.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

I am still dealing with anxiety, which I view it as an obstacle during my development. Currently, my anxiety comes from my newfound experience with college.

I do have my parents and my education assistants who are there to provide help, support, and guidance to overcome these challenges. With enough help from them, I can hopefully have a better experience with college, their work, and make better decisions for my future.
