Meet Ryan Workman

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Workman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ryan with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

My work ethic is rooted in the example my parents set for me growing up. They both worked incredibly hard to provide for our family—not just financially, but emotionally and academically as well. I watched them take on overtime shifts, juggle opposite schedules so that one of them could always be home with us, and still find the energy to help with schoolwork and support our goals. That kind of commitment leaves a lasting impression. It taught me that showing up consistently, staying motivated, and doing whatever it takes isn’t optional—it’s just what you do when people are counting on you. That mindset has shaped how I run my business today. Whether it’s serving customers or leading a team, I carry that same sense of responsibility and drive into everything I do.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I own a business in the home services space, specializing in high-performance concrete coatings like epoxy flooring and polished concrete. We work with both residential and commercial clients, transforming everything from garage floors and patios to warehouses and showrooms. What excites me most is the transformation—taking a dull, boring, concrete surface and turning it into something durable, functional, and genuinely beautiful. There’s a real satisfaction in watching a space go from neglected to like-new in just a day or two, and knowing we’ve added value to someone’s home or business. The first half of my career was largely spent only behind a computer screen, where you rarely truly see the fruits of your labor. There is a satisfaction in actually seeing your team create a transformation.

What makes our brand special is our commitment to quality and consistency. We don’t just focus on the finished product—we put just as much care into preparation, communication, and customer experience. I think in this industry, it’s easy to cut corners, but we’ve built our reputation on doing things the right way. That’s helped us grow a loyal customer base and receive hundreds of 5-star reviews.

We’re also in an exciting phase of growth right now. We’ve recently expanded our service area and are adding new crew members to keep up with demand. Looking ahead, we’re developing a new division focused solely on commercial and industrial projects—everything from airplane hangars to food processing facilities. It’s an exciting time, and we’re just getting started.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Without a doubt, the most impactful skill in my journey has been my background in digital marketing. Ironically, United Floor Coatings wasn’t even supposed to be a real company. I originally built the website over the course of a weekend as a lead generation experiment for a client who was considering expanding into my market. The plan was to gather data, nothing more. But within a few months, the inbound leads started flooding in. When that client ultimately chose not to expand, we looked at the opportunity in front of us and made the decision to turn what had been a “test company” into a real one. From day one, we never had to wonder where our next job would come from—our challenge was how to keep up with the demand.

The second quality that’s been essential is a deep commitment to excellence. In home services, quality matters, but consistency matters even more. Doing the job right, communicating clearly, and standing behind our work have helped us build strong relationships with our customers. That’s led to a steady stream of referrals, repeat business, and five-star reviews that have been key to our continued growth.

The third factor I’d highlight is adaptability. In small business, things rarely go exactly as planned. Being able to pivot quickly, learn on the fly, and stay solutions-focused has made all the difference. Whether it’s navigating supply chain delays, expanding into new markets, or scaling the team, our ability to adjust has kept us competitive.

For those early in their journey, my advice is simple: learn marketing or partner with someone who truly understands it; focus relentlessly on doing great work every time; and be flexible enough to grow in the direction your business pulls you—not just the path you initially imagined.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely—we’re always open to collaborating with owner-minded individuals in the coatings and concrete industry. At United Floor Coatings, one of our core strengths is lead generation and marketing. We’ve built systems that consistently deliver high-quality inbound leads, and we’re looking to partner with skilled professionals who know how to do the work but may struggle to keep their schedules consistently full.

This type of partnership is ideal for experienced installers or small business owners who want to focus on operations without having to worry about advertising, websites, or lead flow. It also allows us to expand into new territories without needing to build and manage crews from the ground up.

If you’re an operator who takes pride in your craft and wants to grow without the usual overhead, we’d love to talk. You can reach us through our website at unitedfloorcoatings.com or connect with us on social media. Let’s explore how we can create something great together.
