Meet Ryen Nikkel

We were lucky to catch up with Ryen Nikkel recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryen, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?

Persisting despite haters and nay-sayers comes down to staying true to yourself and your goals. Growing up, I was the quiet, introverted kid who kept a small circle and often faced teasing, even from those close to me. It wasn’t easy to build confidence, and breaking out of my shell felt like a monumental task.

When I started expressing myself online through content, the negativity didn’t stop. I was mocked by classmates and faced criticism. But over time, I realized that no matter what I did, someone would always have something to say. I could either let that hold me back or continue pursuing what I enjoyed.

I chose the latter. It wasn’t always easy, but I focused on what I loved and what made me happy rather than on the negativity. Now, at 22, I run my own business and do what I love for a living. The key is to stay committed to your passion and not let the opinions of others dictate your path. Embracing who you are and finding joy in your journey can turn obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

At The Publicity Bar, I’m the Founder & CEO, and I handle every aspect of the business myself. Growing up with both of my parents running small businesses, I saw firsthand the dedication and challenges that come with entrepreneurship. Their experiences deeply inspired me, and now, I’m dedicated to using that insight to help other small businesses thrive.

What excites me most about my work is the chance to make a meaningful impact on small businesses. I understand the unique struggles and opportunities that come with running a small business because I’ve experienced them myself. Creating content and putting it on social media is not easy. This personal connection drives me to provide tailored, strategic publicity solutions that truly resonate with each client’s vision and goals.

My approach is highly personalized, focusing on understanding the essence of each business and crafting unique campaigns that help them stand out. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how targeted, creative strategies can make a difference and drive growth.

I am always working on new projects and with new companies every day. I’m passionate about what I do and always eager to connect with fellow entrepreneurs. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my journey, I’d say the three qualities that had the most impact are:

Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward has been crucial. Early on, I faced a lot of criticism and obstacles, but maintaining resilience allowed me to persevere through the tough times and stay focused on my goals.

Advice for Developing Resilience: Start by setting small, achievable goals and celebrating your progress. Each success, no matter how small, builds confidence and strengthens your ability to handle challenges. Remember that setbacks are part of the process, and each one is an opportunity to learn and grow. Giving yourself too much on your plate creates stress and burnout.

Adaptability: Being able to pivot and adapt to new information or changing circumstances has been essential. The ability to adjust strategies and approaches in response to feedback or market changes helped me stay relevant and effective. You must stay on your toes and be prepared to take a hard U turn every once in a while.

Advice for Improving Adaptability: Embrace a mindset of continuous learning. Stay curious and open to new ideas, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Seek out feedback and be willing to adjust your plans based on what you learn. Flexibility is key to navigating the ever-changing landscape of business.

Empathy and Understanding: Understanding the needs and perspectives of clients has been vital in providing effective solutions. Growing up with small business owners, I learned the importance of truly listening and connecting with clients to offer tailored and meaningful support. (This is a big one)

Advice for Developing Empathy: Practice active listening in all your interactions. Ask questions, pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues, and try to see things from others’ perspectives. Building strong relationships through genuine understanding can greatly enhance your ability to serve and collaborate effectively.

By focusing on these qualities, you can build a strong foundation for your journey and better navigate the challenges and opportunities that come your way.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I start by prioritizing and breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This helps me focus on one thing at a time and makes the workload feel less daunting. Using tools like to-do lists or project management apps keeps me organized and on track.

Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, helps me stay calm and reduce stress. Setting aside a few minutes each day for these exercises can make a significant difference.

Setting boundaries and delegating tasks when possible, also helps. Identifying tasks that can be outsourced or automated frees up time and reduces pressure.

Taking regular breaks throughout the day is crucial for avoiding burnout. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which encourages short breaks after focused work, help me stay productive and refreshed.

Finally, talking to someone I trust about my feelings can provide relief and perspective. Finding a supportive network or community of fellow entrepreneurs can also be reassuring and offer valuable advice. This is huge. That one support person you go to will be the key.
