We recently connected with Sabri’A Price and have shared our conversation below.
Sabri’A, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I’m an artist and visionary so it’s very important that I carve out the time to be in my creative flow. I make sure I take time to unplug from all the hustling, bustling and noise. I spend a lot of time in nature and get inspired. I listen to music and daydream. Honestly, being around creative people and consuming art, helps to keep my creativity alive.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a visual artist! I draw and paint but these days I have fallen in love with making digital art on my iPad. I’ve always loved to draw and color since I was a little girl. But I started to take art seriously when I was a sophomore in high school. My geometry teacher was resigning and I helped her clean out her classroom after school. She offered me a box full of cheap, watery paints and a bunch of spongey brushes. I started painting on anything I could find; cardboard, index cards, and posters. I eventually invested in some sketch books, canvases, better brushes and paint. The rest was history. I graduated high school and kept creating while I attended Sam Houston State University. I did art after classes and work. I began to post my work online and people actually liked it! Pretty soon I was meeting my classmates at their apartments to drop off their custom artwork and I was shipping some paintings to some out of state clients too! After college, I moved to San Diego, CA where I stayed with my family. I pursued art full time and had overwhelming support from the art community. I did trade shows, commissions, sold art online. It was amazing! But life started to life and I moved back to Houston, back with my mom. I needed a more consistent income. My art kind of got put on the back burner as I kept jumping from job to job, trying to find the right fit for me. Finally I found it. I got a job as the social media person for a well known pet resort. I was so happy to be with all of the dogs and cats and to take photos of them. I developed a love for animal photography. So that’s another thing that I love to do!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
On my journey, consistency, a positive attitude, and courage were the most impactful qualities. I had to constantly fight negative thoughts and imposter syndrome so that I could show up and show the world my gifts. And The Most High rewarded me for that. I got so much love and support for my craft. I had to develop conversation skills as I had my work in galleries and at trade shows. As a person with social anxiety, you can imagine how hard that was. But because I was passionate about my art and my vision, the words and conversations just began to flow. The right people will understand you and love you for you. My advice would be to try and create something everyday. Even if it’s just a little sketch on a napkin at work. Keep those creative juices flowing. And ACT on your ideas. Write them down as soon as you get an idea or spark of inspiration and act on it as soon as you can!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m definitely looking for like minded people to collaborate with! These are people that understand how important it is that we take care of our minds, souls, bodies, the environment, the animals, the children, the trees, everything. Because they understand that we are everything. These people know who they are, they are in tune with The Divine and their higher self. These people are doing the inner and outer work to be a better human. These people speak the truth and speak out against lies and injustice. I’d love to make some album cover art, book covers, or anything like that for those type of folks that need illustrations for their work.
