We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sabrina Gómez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sabrina below.
Sabrina, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience stems from a significant experience in my early childhood. At the age of five, I had to leave Venezuela and migrate to Costa Rica with my parents. Witnessing their unwavering strength and determination during this transition has been the most significant example of resilience in my life. From a very young age, I learned to adapt to my surroundings and the situations around me because of their influence.
This early lesson in resilience has been key as I moved to New York, stepping out of my comfort zone to pursue my dream. The ability to adapt and stay strong in the face of adversity has been invaluable in my career as an actor. The industry constantly challenges you, tests your limits, and demands daily adjustments. My early experiences and the resilience I learned from my parents have equipped me to handle these challenges and continue pushing forward, no matter how tough things get.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an actor, my career is deeply rooted in my passion for storytelling and bringing characters to life. Growing up, I faced significant changes, such as moving from Venezuela to Costa Rica at a young age, which taught me resilience and adaptability. These qualities have been essential in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the acting industry.
What excites me most about acting is the ability to connect with audiences on an emotional level. Each role I take on is a new opportunity to explore different facets of humanity and to tell stories that resonate with people. There’s something incredibly special about the shared experience between an actor and their audience, where emotions, thoughts, and perspectives are exchanged through performance.
In addition to acting, I also have a passion for singing. Incorporating music into my career has allowed me to explore another dimension of storytelling. Singing enables me to express emotions and connect with audiences in a unique and powerful way, adding depth to my performances.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are empathy, perseverance, and networking.
Empathy: Moving countries at a young age taught me to understand and connect with different people and cultures. This ability to empathize has been incredibly valuable in my acting and singing career, allowing me to bring depth to my characters and performances. For those early in their journey, I recommend actively listening to others and trying to see things from different perspectives. This will not only enhance your performances but also help you build stronger relationships in your personal and professional life.
Perseverance: The journey from adapting to new countries to pursuing a career in a highly competitive industry like acting and singing requires perseverance. My advice to those starting out is to stay committed to your goals, even when faced with difficulties. Keep pushing forward, practice regularly, and don’t get discouraged by setbacks. Celebrate small victories along the way to keep your motivation high. Go step by step, this will help see things less overwhelming. Trust the process.
Networking: Building connections within the industry has played a significant role in my journey. Networking opens doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and learning experiences. My advice for those early in their journey is to actively seek out and engage with communities in your field. Building a strong support network potential career advancements.
For those early in their journey, it’s essential to cultivate these qualities through continuous learning and self-reflection. Seek out experiences that challenge you, surround yourself with inspiring individuals, and stay dedicated to honing your craft.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Feeling overwhelmed is a big challenge in my career, especially in acting and singing. There’s so much uncertainty – not knowing when auditions will come or how projects will turn out can be really stressful.
When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself to take things step by step. I break tasks into smaller parts to make them more manageable. But sometimes, the uncertainty still gets to me.
In those moments, I tell myself to focus on what I can control and let go of the rest. It’s hard, but it helps me stay grounded and not get lost in worrying about things I can’t change.
I’ve found ways to cope, specifically seeking support from loved ones when the weight of uncertainty feels too heavy to bear alone. It’s all part of the journey in the arts – there are ups and downs, but the moments on stage or connecting with audiences make it all worth it.
