We recently connected with Sabrina Hughes and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me has been challenging and empowering. Early on, I realized how much representation matters—not just for others who see me, but also for myself. It’s not always easy to walk into spaces where my presence is an anomaly, but I’ve learned to view those moments as opportunities to educate, inspire, and pave the way for others.
I’ve found success by embracing my authenticity and staying focused on my purpose. I make it a point to use my voice and share my perspective because I know the unique value it brings. Building confidence hasn’t happened overnight—it’s come through preparation, mastering my craft, and seeking mentorship from others who’ve walked similar paths. Most importantly, I remind myself that my presence in these spaces is an act of courage and change.
At Sabrebrebaby’s Brown Book Publishing Company L.L.C., our mission is to increase Black and Brown representation in literature. We believe no child should feel like the ‘only one’ in their educational materials. With our My World series, we’ve introduced a one-of-a-kind set of children’s books that celebrate diversity through colors, shapes, language, and culture. These books not only connect with children, but also encourage inclusivity and foster academic growth. Our goal is to make educational spaces more inclusive for future generations. Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the founder, CEO, and lead author of Sabrebrebaby’s Brown Book Publishing Company L.L.C., a Black and woman-owned business. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to address the underrepresentation of Black and Brown voices in literature and provide culturally relevant educational materials for children and families. What sets us apart is the way we foster empowerment and connection. Through our books, author consultations, school visits, community events, and collaborations with others who share our mission, we create spaces where underrepresented voices are celebrated, and where young readers can see themselves reflected in stories that matter.
The most exciting part of our work is witnessing the impact we have on both children and authors. It warms my heart to see young readers light up when they find a character who looks like them, or when they learn something new about the world. It’s not just about books; it’s about creating a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. That’s the magic we get to be part of—a ripple effect of smiles, laughter, and inspiration. It’s an honor to serve as a role model and help ignite imaginations, all while promoting the joy of learning.
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to introduce new authors, more book drops, expand our community events, and for the grand opening of a new community center “Arts After Dark” in Las Vegas, NV March 6-8, 2025. This space will allow us to host in-person events, classes, and workshops, alongside virtual courses. We’re just getting started, and we want you to be part of the journey. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that have had the most impact on my journey are resilience, empathy, and adaptability. These three qualities helped me navigate the challenges and build a business that truly makes a difference.
1. Resilience- Starting a business with a mission like mine comes with challenges that can feel overwhelming. But I’ve learned that perseverance is key. Whether it’s navigating setbacks or moments of self-doubt, my advice to anyone starting out is to stay committed to your vision, even when it’s hard. Remember, every obstacle is an opportunity to grow and build resilience.
2. Empathy- Understanding the experiences of Black and Brown communities allows me to create stories and educational materials that genuinely resonate. Empathy helps me connect with others on a deeper level and guides the way we design our books and programs. My advice here is simple: always listen. Listen to your audience, your community, and your own heart. The better we understand one another, the more meaningful our work becomes.
3. Adaptability- This one is vital in navigating the ever-changing world of publishing and entrepreneurship. Whether it’s embracing new technology, adjusting to market shifts, or responding to unexpected challenges, being flexible has kept me moving forward. My advice is to be open to change and willing to pivot when needed. Don’t be afraid to take detours. Sometimes they can lead to the most rewarding outcomes.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
A book that has had a significant impact on my personal and professional development is Michelle Obama’s “The Light We Carry.” This book resonates with me deeply because it feels like a book I can revisit at different stages in my life, gaining new insights each time. Michelle’s words have offered me encouragement, valuable life tools, and clarity in finding the power of my own voice—especially during times when I’ve struggled to find my light.
The most powerful lesson I’ve taken away from the book is the idea of “going high when they go low.” In a world that often feels divisive, this philosophy has reminded me to approach challenges with grace, resilience, patience, and integrity. “Going high” doesn’t mean ignoring the pain or the struggles, but rather not letting those distractions derail your greater purpose. As I reflect on my journey with Sabrebrebaby’s Brown Book Publishing Company L.L.C., Michelle’s insights on community-building and the importance of togetherness closely align with my mission. Her wisdom has provided me with the tools to navigate my entrepreneurial path with empathy and strength. “The Light We Carry” serves as a constant reminder of the values I strive to instill in my work—uplifting others, being authentic, and staying true to my purpose.
