We recently connected with Sabrina Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
Leadership is all about risk. We risk in relationship. We risk in finding hope in opportunities. We risk in unchartered waters that force us to chop down tall grass and find the predators so we can clear the way for those coming behind us. In order to develop an ability to take risk, you must step out of areas with predictable outcomes and comfort into places that expand into tremendous potential. There’s no doubt that you might fall on your face, but who hasn’t, so just get back up and go at it again. New opportunities to impact the lives of others are all around us, and they need us to risk for the sake of their wellbeing. This is how I developed my ability to take risks.
We all have a tendency to turn back toward the familiar and stable. The things that have been tested, tried, and proven reliable. These days demand courage and resilience. They require risk so that our work will ultimately have purpose and impact on lives of others most in need. The 510 Foundation administers 13 ministries that are making local, national, and international impact on the lives of some of the most vulnerable. I was not blessed to keep all the benefits of that to myself. I was gifted so that I can pass on the gift of abundant life to others.
Risk is best tasked in community, working alongside others who are willing to take the plunge alongside you. Sometimes; however, we must step out alone so those who are more timid can see that the risk was worth it. Not all are called to lead. Not all are able to handle failure that comes in seasons to us all. Developing the ability to take a risk requires assurance in the One who has called and equips each of us to do the great work that ultimately changes the trajectory of many lives. Seeing that transformation is fuel on the journey that ignites the passion to keep taking the risk. It is a humble privilege to lead others and learn together in life’s journey! God bless you!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My profession has layers that intertwine. I serve as the Executive Pastor of a 126 year old church in East Nashville, Nashville First Church of the Nazarene. Additionally, I am the Chief Operations Officer of 510 Foundation, a non-profit with 11 urban and 2 international ministries. Finally, I serve as the Co-Director of Justice Circle Nashville and am leading the ACT NOW 2.0 initiative for Nashville in this nation-wide effort impacting our communities and law enforcement agencies. We work closely with our Metro Nashville Police Department in multiple efforts.
I am most excited about all of the hope and impact that the church, foundation, and justice work is making on the lives of literally tens of thousands of people around the globe. The ministries under these entities are meeting needs of some of the most vulnerable and changing trajectories for many. At the end of a person’s career, it is what they have done for others that will ultimately carry the most sense of fulfillment and greatest meaning. We are leaving behind us a trail of work and impact, and my desire is that my trail is filled with opportunities that allow individuals to glean a great sense of Hope that produces an abundant life!
We are feeding hungry, clothing naked, encouraging the downcast, providing resources and therapy to the addicted, developing the arts and athletics, filling new homes for the recently homeless with furniture and household goods, teaching refugees to speak English and engage with the American culture, creating community for young families, and fighting to bring justice and unity to a culture that leans toward division. We must step forward together by finding those common, human realities that makes us all sense the need for collaborative living. We truly are better together! There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities that have made the greatest impact on me are my faith in God, my compassion for others, and my strong community of support.
My advice is to develop all three of these areas in your own life. We are not meant to live, serve, or lead alone. We need guidance that is supernatural. We need the encouragement and correction of others, and we need hearts that care for those whom we can lift. It’s important that we bring others up and along in our journey.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, we are always looking to collaborate with others who have kindred hearts and minds for others. We love to have fun and journey together. We are impassioned to reach out with impact on the lives of others. Individuals who have a heart to do a simple thing for which they are gifted to do, we encourage them to join as a 510 Champion. Those who have big hearts and willing minds but are physically restricted, we would love your prayers and your financial support so that more lives can be impacted for good.
