Meet Sabrina Zellis

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sabrina Zellis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sabrina below.

Hi Sabrina, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

My confidence and self-esteem have been nurtured by my family, particularly my mother. She has always encouraged me to be myself and to try new things. Her constant support and reassurance that giving my best effort is what truly matters have instilled in me a strong sense of self-worth and determination.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Nine years ago, I took a leap of faith. I left my corporate optical job in Texas to pursue a career in yoga in California. I know it sounds unusual, especially since so many people were moving from California to Texas at the time, but in true Aquarius fashion, I did the opposite. Although I enjoyed working in optical, the fulfillment I found in yoga was unparalleled, and I wanted to see where that path could take me.

That path led me to incredible opportunities: managing a YogaWorks studio, becoming a certified yoga teacher, returning to the corporate side in the YogaWorks Teacher Training Department, running my own online yoga business, and now, serving as General Manager for the best yoga studio in the desert, Coachella Yoga.

Taking that leap of faith transformed the trajectory of my life, and I couldn’t be happier with where I am now. I love working the work that I do. My marketing and PR degree has been invaluable as I create community programs, events, and studio communications. Their is such a vibe here—from supporting our teachers to helping new students—its incredibly rewarding. This journey has shown me that following my passion was the best decision I ever made.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I’d say three things were game-changers on my journey: adaptability, perseverance, and effective communication.

First up, is adaptability. Moving from a corporate optical gig in Texas to a yoga career in California meant I had to be super flexible. I had to pick up new skills and adjust to different environments, from managing a studio to teaching classes and running an online business.

Advice: Embrace change and stay open to new experiences. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Chase opportunities that challenge you and help you grow. The more adaptable you are, the more resilient you’ll be when things get tough.

Second, is perseverance. The journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. Starting from scratch in a new industry and figuring out how to run a business had its challenges. Perseverance was key. I had to stay committed to my goals, even when the going got tough.

Advice: Keep your eye on the long-term vision and don’t get discouraged by setbacks. Persistence is everything. Break down your goals into smaller, bite-sized steps and celebrate your progress along the way. Every little step forward counts.

Third, effective communication. Strong communication skills were essential, whether it was managing a studio, teaching classes, or running a business. Interacting with students, coordinating with staff, and promoting the studio all required clear and effective communication.

Advice: Level up your communication skills. Practice active listening and learn to articulate your thoughts clearly. Build strong relationships by being open, honest, and empathetic. Good communication can boost collaboration and help you build a supportive network.

For those just starting out, don’t be afraid of failure or pivoting. Find a mentor, take on new challenges, and be patient with yourself as you grow. Every experience, whether good or bad, is a chance to learn and improve. Keep hustling, and you’ll get there!

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

A book that has been incredibly influential for me is “Battlefield of the Mind” by Joyce Meyer. It’s packed with insights about the power of our thoughts and how they shape our lives. Here are a few of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom I picked up from it:

The Power of Positive Thinking: Meyer really drives home the idea that our thoughts shape our reality. By focusing on positive thinking and pushing out the negative, we can transform our lives. This concept has helped me stay optimistic and focused, even when things get tough.

Taking Control of Your Mind: The book teaches the importance of being intentional with our thoughts. Meyer suggests we actively choose thoughts that align with our goals and values. This approach has empowered me to take control of my mental landscape, giving me more clarity and purpose.

The Importance of Faith: While Meyer incorporates her Christian faith into her teachings, the principles she discusses are universally applicable. She talks about trusting in a higher power and using faith as a tool for mental strength, which can resonate with anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs. Her perspective on using faith to overcome mental battles has been a guiding light for me in both personal and professional challenges.

Even if you’re not someone of Christian faith, this book is still a fantastic read. The lessons on mental discipline and the power of a positive mindset are valuable for anyone looking to gain better control over their thoughts and improve their overall mental well-being. “Battlefield of the Mind” is a must-read to understand the significance of mental discipline and the transformative power of positive thinking.
