We recently connected with Sade Shine and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sade with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from my experience working! I guess it began in high school, when I joined the Speech and Debate team. I was coached by what in my opinion, is the best debate coach in the state of Missouri. His name Jack Tuckness. Once he discovered my natural abilities to sing, act, and debate. He began to help me develop my skills further. We went on to win several competitions. Including state and national titles for Dramatic Interpretation and Lincoln-Douglas
Debate. Being a winner really motivated to work harder. That means putting more hours into learning and rehearsing materials. Showing up early and leaving late. Treating every event with an equal amount of importance. Researching things I didn’t quite understand. This train of thought has ultimately led me to most of my opportunities.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For many years I strictly focused on opportunities that would showcase my abilities. Now I am also working behind the scenes to provide opportunities for other artist as well. The first project I’m working on is my Non-profit organization The Shine Foundation. This program is targeted on helping Artist reach their goals by providing financial and educational opportunities at no cost to the individual. As well as addressing issues like homelessness in my community. I have also taken on the role of “Producer/Director”. Producing live shows like the “Queens of Soul’ starting Myself and featuring other vocalist. As well as “The BodyGaurd” the Broadway musical set to run in May of 2024 in Branson Mo. I also have expanded my work as an activist in my community by hosting my annual Juneteenth event. This event is completely free to the community with a host of activities, entertainment, free food and resources provided to the community with the help of donors and sponsors. I do all of this in addition to continuing to Perform as an artist myself.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say “Not giving Up”! Has been the most important part of my journey. This industry can be hard so staying self-motivated is crucial to being successful. My advice to artist is to look at this as a career and not a dream. Draw up a plan. Create a team. Create a budget. Know what you want and where you are going.Always stay true to yourself and Believe in your self.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
At this moment, I would have to say “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker has been the book of most influence in my journey. I say this because after playing the lead role of Ms.Celie in the Broadway Musical version of “The Color Purple” at the Fox theater, produced by the Mosaic Arts Collective in 2023. I became more confident in my abilities and skills as a performer.
Not only on stage but offstage as well. This story was crucial in helping me realize my strengths through my struggles as a woman as an artist and as a Black business woman in America. This story helped me to face and conquer so many insecurities as it casually relates to so many real life situations, even in today’s society. It helped me to understand the beauty in being vulnerable and stripped down in front of my audience. Although it wasn’t a glamorous role.I would advise any person pursuing a stage career to try reading this book as the main character and and applying her silent strengths to their everyday lives.
