We were lucky to catch up with Sade Simmons recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sade, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As an artist of color hailing from a city rich in diversity, being the only one in the room has been a journey of resilience and empowerment. In such moments, I draw strength from the cultural mosaic of my upbringing, recognizing the beauty and strength that arises from diversity. I’ve learned to navigate these situations by embracing my unique perspective and using it as a source of creative inspiration. My art becomes a powerful voice, weaving together narratives that resonate across various backgrounds. I’ve found that authenticity is my greatest asset, allowing me to connect with others on a genuine level. By staying true to my roots and celebrating the richness of my cultural background, I’ve not only overcome challenges but also contributed to a more inclusive and vibrant artistic landscape. There is a lot of self-awareness, self-love, and knowledge of self.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an artist constantly exploring new avenues of creativity and pushing artistic boundaries. My work spans a diverse range of mediums, from traditional jewelry to innovative products. What makes my artistic journey truly exciting is the recent launch of podcasts and classes, allowing me to share insights, techniques, and the joy of creation with a wider audience. I am passionate about using high-quality materials to elevate my art, and this commitment is reflected in every piece I produce. What sets my brand apart is not just the products but the inclusive approach I take. Through artist talks, museum tours, podcasts and classes, I aim to demystify art, making it accessible to those who may not have been exposed to it before. Stay tuned for upcoming events, as I continue to expand and launch new initiatives that celebrate the ever-evolving world of creativity!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that played a pivotal role are the ability to execute change quickly, eagerness to learn, and being coachable. The capacity to adapt swiftly to changing circumstances allowed me to navigate challenges and seize opportunities efficiently. Embracing a continuous learning mindset fueled my growth, enabling me to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving landscape. Equally important was being coachable – the willingness to accept feedback, learn from experiences, and adapt my approach accordingly.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to cultivate a proactive attitude towards change. Embrace it as a constant, and develop the ability to pivot swiftly when needed. Prioritize a hunger for knowledge, seeking out opportunities for learning and skill enhancement. Stay open-minded and coachable, valuing the insights and feedback from mentors and peers. Remember, growth often comes from embracing challenges and being adaptable. By fostering these qualities, individuals can navigate their journey with resilience, continuously learn, and position themselves for success in their chosen path.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The primary obstacle I currently face is maintaining a healthy mental state amidst the constant challenges of life. Balancing the demands of creativity with the struggles of dealing with slight depression and anxiety can be overwhelming. To overcome this challenge, I’ve prioritized self-care and mental well-being. Implementing daily mindfulness practices, seeking professional support when needed, and cultivating a supportive network have been crucial. I’ve also channeled my experiences into my art, creating pieces that do not hold onto the weight of these issues but rather serve as expressions of resilience and hope. By acknowledging the struggle and actively working towards mental wellness, I strive to create a space where my art becomes a beacon of positivity, inspiring others facing similar challenges.
