We were lucky to catch up with Sadie C recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sadie, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
It’s been a trip after realizing I was often the only women, on top of that, Asian, in comedy clubs when I did my shows and open mics. Even just sitting down as an audience in comedy shows, I was often surrounded by a sea of white people, with a few POC’s. I think to say “I stand out” is an understatement in times like these.
In the beginning, I felt like, Am I an outsider? As I navigate the comedy scene which was about 87% white men. And more so when I was a beginner at comedy and wasn’t confident. I felt truly alone even in a land as diverse as Los Angeles.
Now after two years, I am absolutely used to the “everyone staring at me” syndrome. Also because of my actress background, I am more than fine with being stared at. I am very comfortable in my skin, especially after I find myself funnier every day ha.
Most importantly, I have turned the narrative around to serve me. I am getting invited to be on shows, at least partially because I am a rarity Asian woman comedian. There’s only me and Ally Wong now. (Kidding of course). So while other white men swarm around and compete with each other, I may be getting more opportunities than them in this field, for the first time ever in history.
My podcast “Ecobitch Actress” with its 10 subscribes also gives me a lot of inner strength. Check it out. My next show is 9/19. Follow sadiecofficial on instagram to get the details.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an actress, singer and standup comedian. If you are tired of reading all the words on screen, I have a podcast where I share my story as an actress and comic. It’s called “Ecobitch Actress” and is available on all podcast apps and Youtube. My next comedy show is 9/19 in glendale. Check out sadiecofficial on instagram for details.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First is resilience. I can count about 200 auditions that I didn’t get each year, every single year. With that much rejection, another would have given up. But I wash my face and come back tomorrow.
Second would be a sense of security. Have a side job that pays so you don’t have to worry about starving and joining the homeless. That fear bleeds into your artist dream. Secure the dough first.
Third is never stop training. For me just learning other things like voice and speech, singing, comedy, improv all helped toward my acting craft. Even physical training, stunts, voiceover, I have been trying them all out. Wow I have done a lot of shit to date.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
My acting class taught me to have “celebration” acts for small wins in life. I have a list of 10 happy things that I do to celebrate the achievements in life that can be as small as finishing laundry.
One example involves excessive boba drinking. Yay Asian pride. Other things may include a getaway trip, taking a favorite person to dinner, or, this is my secret indulgence, milkshakes. Yes, don’t get to have that every day!
Anyway, celebrating with small prizes has helped my mental health.
