We were lucky to catch up with Safa Khan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Safa, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
This is a tough one and I’m still learning new strategies every day. Being a business owner, dental student, and wife, I experience burnout very frequently. I believe in order to overcome it, we must first recognize signs we are on our way there. You have to know yourself and understand what is normal for you. Some of you might nap everyday when you get home and you are totally fine! For others, this is a sign of burnout or maybe underlying depression. I personally nap a lot unintentionally during high stress periods so this is one big signal to myself that I need to change something. Some other examples of burn out signs include appetite changes, mood shifts, and self hygiene. All of these can be red flags to you or your loved ones that you’re not doing okay and need extra love and support. If you don’t know what your signs are, just ask friends or family and they probably can give you more insight!
So now that we identified we are burnt out, what’s next? We need to plan something for our self care every day to work through this feeling of overwhelm. This usually comes with feeling like we have no time for ourselves or the things we love. So in order to change that, make time for just ONE thing you love or need every day. It could be washing your hair, working out, cleaning your room, etc! Although those can’t change the things making you feel overwhelmed, they do help you take control back. We are not robots meant to run forever.
Lastly, burnout can make us feel ungrateful. My dad once told me, if you’re not feeling grateful for all the blessings you have in life, first cut some things off your to-do list and second thank God for waking up every morning-even if you don’t believe it. By saying “thank you God for waking up today,” my mindset shifted and I trained my brain to think of the positive. I learned to be THANKFUL I am in school and get to study for an exam or that business is good and I have clients to work with! I also learned to say no when something just isn’t worth my energy and although I still feel guilty, it’s necessary on your way to being successful.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
When I’m not practicing to see patients, I am woking on my Bridal clients! I love the artistic connection between dentistry and makeup and I think this makes my brand unique. With my knowledge of microbiology and anatomy, I pay extra attention to the sanitation of each item in my studio and the placement on my client’s features. Currently I am working on showing clients what I am capable of artistically with bold eye looks and emphasizing my clients natural features. I have expanded my brand to include hair and sari draping upon request. My favorite part of being a makeup artist is working for all of the multi-cultural weddings and embracing the differences! Some I have worked for include Pakistani, African American, Nigerian, Egyptian, Indian, and Hispanic events! These are just a few and I’m looking forward to expanding this list. If you are interested in booking please DM me for my booking site on instagram or email me all details for a Quote.
As for being a student doctor, I am accepting patients and would love the support of my community! If you are interested in scheduling for a cleaning, filling, implant, denture or crown, just reach out and I can direct you to the scheduling department!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Ask for help and delegate where you can.
No one successful got there by him/herself.
2. Know your boundaries and how to say no.
People will respect you more when you respect your own time.
3. Practice gratitude.
If you’re not happy in the end then what was the point.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am searching for models to collaborate with and other creative influencers! I love working with genuine humble people who see the vision and let me run with it. If this is you, email or DM me and let’s get to work!
On the dental side, if you need any cosmetic treatment done at a discounted rate (crowns, fillings, partial dentures, cleanings, root canals, ETC) I am accepting patients starting June 1st so just reach out and lets get you (or granny) taken care of!
