Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sage Avalon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sage, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
I think creativity blocks definitely come with the terrain as an artist.
One way to overcome that is incorporating a new idea that isn’t the way you normally do things. For example, experimenting with gold leaf opened up a new door for me with painting. If I want to write a song and don’t feel any inspiration picking up the guitar like I normally do, I might feel more inspired starting on piano (rather than guitar like I usually do) or collaborating with someone and bouncing off their ideas.
And sometimes, you just need to recharge and have faith that inspiration will come at the right time. Balance between absorbing the outside world and creating from your inside world is important.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a musician, and I mainly sing, songwrite and produce. Being a female producer and mixing and mastering my own music feels special. I really enjoy the creative freedom it gives me, and I’m proud of how much I’ve improved on my production skills the last few years.
I am planning on putting out my second EP this summer, and I think the production is much improved from my first one. I also made a bunch of music videos for it, and the visuals are a big part of what makes it special to me. Lately I’ve been in the mood for vintage motels, desert fantasies and dreamscapes. I plan on including all of the singles I’ve put out in the last few years as well as a new music video and 2 new songs. I am finishing up producing those right now! It’s very exciting because I feel I have not been putting much out recently and I want to change that. I feel inspired lately, for the first time in forever.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If you’re a musician of any kind, learning basic music production is an indispensable skillset. It will open up your creative and work flow SO much. Being able to record whatever you want, in your own home, whenever you want to, with infinite layers is so freeing. I think my songwriting flow is the strongest when I have the DAW open and I can lay out my ideas like sketching with sounds.
Knowing when to get opinions, help, or ideas from other people is also a big one. There’s value in pushing yourself to improve in new areas but it’s very easy as a DIY indie artist to take too much on your own plate at once.
Having an identity as an artist outside of how others perceive you is imperative. And one step further, having an identity as a person outside of your artistry. You will get swept away without those anchors.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to do shows with new people, and honestly I would really like to start or join a band. I really want to make music with other people. Ideally alternative rock with some indie and electronic influences, like Pvris, Deftones, Lydia, Mazzy Star, Warpaint. If someone wanted to contact me, email would be the best way.
