Meet Saika Satomi

We were lucky to catch up with Saika Satomi recently and have shared our conversation below.

Saika, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I was born and raised in Japan, but from an early age I lacked confidence in myself and cared too much about what others thought of me, so I couldn’t really assert myself. I came to LA at the age of 20 with nothing and no English, and now I run two businesses. I’ve finally found my true self and self-esteem. It wasn’t easy getting there.
This is because I have experienced many things, taken on challenges, learned, achieved results, and gained a wealth of life experience. However, perhaps the most important thing is that I have come to face myself and develop a sense of self-love. There are many people in the world who are far more successful than me, and there is no end to comparisons. But I am me. When you recognize your own value, your confidence and self-esteem will naturally develop.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

When I was 20 years old, I came to LA from Japan with my own little money. At that time, I first came to LA for a short-term language study abroad. The reason was that I wanted to find something I could be passionate about. I also thought that if I could speak English, I would have more opportunities and places, be able to communicate with more people, and enjoy life. So I took the plunge. Now, I have been living in LA for 16 years and run two businesses, one in LA and one in Japan. Five years after I first came here in 2014, I opened an eyelash salon called SAIKA Beauty in Beverly Hills, and over the past three years, I have created a probiotic supplement called Re:Bio, which I have been selling in Japan since 2021 and in the United States since 2022. When I was 20 years old, I couldn’t speak English, I didn’t know anyone, and I had no business experience. However, deciding to invest in myself at that time was the best decision of my life.
I worked as a waitress first , and when I had time, I started learning what I loved. I was interested in beauty and health, so I started as a yoga instructor, and then I got certified in massage and esthetics. It was hard to find a job that I really enjoyed, but when I started doing eyelash extensions, I thought, “This is it!” I was sure that this was the job I loved. After working at another salon for a year and a half, I decided to start my own business, “SAIKA Beauty.” Just about five years after coming to the United States, I opened my eyelash salon, but I had no business experience at all, so I learned the business from scratch. Of course, I didn’t know anything, so I made a lot of mistakes and spent a lot of time trying to understand the legal system of business, especially in English. What was so great was that the eyelash salon was busy from the beginning, but the year I opened SAIKA Beauty, I got sick with intestinal problems. I suffered from diarrhea, bloody stools, fatigue, and food allergies every day, but I had no idea what was causing it. Looking back now, I realize that I had been working too hard ever since coming to the United States, not listening to my body, and feeling extremely stressed and tired. That’s when I started to learn how important intestinal health is to the body and how important it is to have a balance between work and personal life. A few years later, I used my knowledge and experience to start developing Re:Bio probiotic supplements.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important qualities are: 1. Continual learning and challenging yourself, 2. Work-life balance, and 3. Compassion for all. These are the most important qualities not only for business, but also for relationships and personal growth.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

First, meditate or go into nature, calm down, and ask yourself, What am I learning from this problem?
