We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sakura Yoshino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sakura, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I like sharing my Japanese background with the world, and I also enjoy entertaining people. Working as an assistant channel manager at Glocal Media for our Japanese channels made my dream come true. I get motivated every time I get comments from our viewers enjoying our content. I do believe the entertainment industry could help make someone’s day a little happier and brighter. Whenever I think about our audience, it gives me the power to work hard to develop the channels to be more enjoyable.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Glocal Media, the company I work for, offers a variety of international television programming.
My role is to ensure our Japanese channels run on schedule, program shows on Amazon platforms and the DOKI channel, communicate with TV companies in Japan, and make PR videos if necessary. We are the only company that offers Japanese content on cable and satellite TV in the U.S. and Canada and our target audience includes both Japanese and those who are interested in Japanese culture and language. Our goal is to help Japanese people feel at home, and to spark greater interest in Japanese content.
The names of the Japanese channels are NIPPON TV Channel (cable and satellite TV) and DOKI TV (streaming). Please check our channels if you are interested in Japanese content!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As I started living in LA, I learned the importance of self-care and the balance of mental and physical health which affect all of us. I remember in my freshman year in college, one of my mentors told me this, “see yourself as someone who you truly care about and treat yourself great.” I do believe self-care is one of the keys to becoming successful, if we don’t have a healthy body and mind, we won’t have enough energy to achieve our goals. To stay healthy and happy, I spoil myself as much as I can. For instance, have delicious meals, walk in nature, stay in my apartment and do nothing, and do some creative activities such as acting and filming. When I find myself in balance, I notice positive outcomes follow. So, I hope you too stay happy and healthy! Collectively, we can all make a difference if we all concentrate on ourselves first.
I give myself a day to rewind, at least once a week or once every two weeks. On those days, I enjoy staying in my apartment and resting by myself. For instance, I like taking naps, watching movies and TV, reading webcomics, and ordering Uber Eats. By giving myself those “Days Off”, I get recharged and that helps me avoid burnout. This also allows me to perform well in the work environment, because I’m well rested. It’s important to listen to our bodies and take time to relax whenever we feel stressed and burnout approaching.
Lastly, I believe it’s important to meet as many people as possible. While we can learn from our own experiences, listening to others’ journeys can help us discover ways to succeed in our careers. By observing and listening to the people around me, I’ve been learning not only about my field of work, but also about life as an adult.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The past few years were the most challenging years in my life. Our company was scammed by immigration attorneys twice, which gave me extreme fear of losing my job. Without my boss, my manager, my parents, and all the supportive people around me, I wouldn’t have been able to stay calm and focus on my education and career. Fortunately, we’ve met the right attorney this year, and we finally started my immigration process again. Although I am still feeling a little anxious as my immigration case is still in progress, I learned important life lessons. Going through this event, I’ve learned that if we keep going and trying to achieve our goals, it will guide us somewhere. We might not get what we dreamed of, but we could gain great experiences, meet amazing people, and improve our knowledge. I realized if we enjoy the moment even in difficult situations, those times would eventually become the greatest pieces of memories in our life.
I am thankful for the people who gave me such warm messages when I was going through the toughest time. Thank you.
