Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Salathia Singleton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Salathia, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I got my resiliency from life traumas and losses.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
A business owner for 24 years of Upscale Hair Salon. I have been in the hair industry for over 33 years. I specialize in natural hair care. We service a diverse clientele with lots of professional clients. I like to say everyone is a celebrity client at Upscale. Mother of 3 adult children and MiMi to 3. I think it’s safe to say I absolutely love Hair! I desire to eventually expand the salon to suites. I also have a media communications degree from Full Sail University and I would like to start a mentoring group as well as teach new stylists coming into the industry.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I grew up in a salon as a child. That in itself gave me a head start in knowing what I did and didn’t want in my career as a hair stylist. My work ethic and ability to give great customer service is a plus. Also I take great pride in my work. My advice to anyone starting out in any field should shadow a person that is successful. Learn everything about the field so that you will know first hand pros and cons. Also remain teachable because we should always be open to continue to stay on top through classes, mentorship’s etc.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
After Covid and having to shut down for a period of time. I realized that I was burnt out. After being out of the salon for almost 2 years. I finally came back to work and it’s like I never left. I was able to work at ease without feeling overwhelmed and overworked. My biggest area of growth would be that I grew beyond 15 hour days to regular work days, but still providing great service to all clients.
