Meet Salem Newman

We were lucky to catch up with Salem Newman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Salem, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

Generosity is not a haphazard behavior but my basic orientation to life. Generosity is one of the quickest and easiest ways to be happier. I think that I understood that at a very young age and cultivated it in my life. I believe that we are wired to be generous and that we feel each other’s pain. When we see another human suffering or have a need, we want to do something about it; whether through acts of kindness, gifts, or other forms of support. When we act on those feelings, the impact is profound for both the giver and the receiver and often times can create a ripple effect.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Fairhaven South is a gluten free and allergy friendly cottage bakery. It was established in order to provide affordable, beautiful, and delicious gluten free baked goods for people living in my community. I specialize in event cakes and cupcakes.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I have always enjoyed baking and cooking. I am an adventurous cook and love trying new foods, recipes, and restaurants. I spend a great deal of my time cooking and learning about food.

I have extensive knowledge about food allergies, as my son and myself suffer from food allergies and intolerances. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to find quality gluten free baked goods and allergy friendly foods.

Health and wellness are a top priority in my life, as I suffer from an autoimmune disease and truly know how difficult it can be. The food that you put in your body is an important part of managing your health and feeling your best.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My parents have always supported my interests and allowed me to express my creativity. My mother taught me how to cook at a very young age. She taught me how to work hard, to be kind and fair, and to be myself. My mother is still my toughest food critic, which pushes me to be better.
