Meet Salima Subramanian

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Salima Subramanian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Salima, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from the people who’ve believed in me, even when I doubted myself. One of the biggest tests of that resilience came when I decided to start my own salon. I had always loved hair, but I was starting from scratch—no big client list, no safety net, just a dream and a lot of uncertainty.

The early days were exhausting. I worked long hours, sometimes with only a few clients scheduled, and every unexpected expense felt like a mountain I couldn’t climb. I questioned myself constantly: Am I doing the right thing? Can I really make this work? But then I remembered my dad’s encouragement when I first told him I wanted to open a salon suite. He reminded me that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s moving forward despite it.

I also drew resilience from my own experiences with hair struggles. I had faced my own challenges with hair loss and scalp health, and I understood deeply what it felt like to feel helpless about something that is so tied to confidence. That perspective fueled me to learn more, try new techniques, and eventually create a Head Spa treatment that could help others in ways I had wished someone had helped me.

Over time, resilience became a habit. It wasn’t just about “pushing through” hard days—it was about adjusting, learning from mistakes, and celebrating small wins, like a client leaving my studio with a smile or finally mastering a treatment that once felt impossible. Every setback became a lesson, every long day a proof that I could handle more than I thought.

Now, resilience feels like a muscle I’ve built from experience, patience, and a deep love for what I do. And when I feel uncertain, I remind myself: I’ve faced challenges before, and I’ve grown stronger because of them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Salima Subramanian, a Certified Hair, Scalp & Skin Care Enthusiast. My journey into hair and wellness began with my own experiences with hair loss and scalp health, which inspired me to pursue education, advanced techniques, and holistic care practices. I wanted to create solutions that not only help people look their best but feel rejuvenated and confident in their hair and skin.

I run Serenity Studio, a wellness-focused salon offering head spa treatments, facials, and holistic hair care. What makes my work special is the way I combine technical skill with a focus on wellness. Every service is designed to leave clients feeling cared for, relaxed, and revitalized.

Recently, I’ve been expanding my offerings to provide more options for different budgets and needs. This includes new facial treatments, flexible head spa sessions, and customizable membership plans and packages that allow clients to build a wellness routine that works perfectly for them. My goal is to make self-care accessible, enjoyable, and personal—so each client leaves feeling like the best version of themselves.

At the core, my work is about connection, care, and creating an experience that nourishes both hair and skin, as well as overall wellness.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Resilience – Building a business and pursuing a passion isn’t always smooth. I’ve faced slow weeks, unexpected challenges, and self-doubt along the way. Resilience has been crucial—learning to keep moving forward, adapt, and view setbacks as opportunities to learn. Advice: Embrace challenges as lessons, celebrate small wins, and remember that persistence often matters more than perfection.

2. Continuous Learning – From formal education to advanced training and exploring new techniques, staying curious and committed to learning has been transformative. Knowledge of scalp health, hair care, and facial wellness allows me to provide services that truly help clients. Advice: Seek out education, workshops, and mentorship. Never stop learning—it keeps your work fresh and your clients confident in your expertise.

3. Passion & Connection – Passion fuels your dedication, but connecting with clients on a personal level makes your work meaningful and memorable. Understanding clients’ needs, listening, and creating experiences tailored to them sets you apart. Advice: Cultivate genuine curiosity about people, be present, and let your love for your craft shine. Clients notice authenticity, and it builds loyalty and trust.

For anyone starting out, I’d say: focus on building these qualities simultaneously. Keep learning, stay resilient through challenges, and never lose the joy and passion that brought you into your craft in the first place.

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is someone who craves more than just a beauty service—they’re looking for a place where they can exhale, feel cared for, and invest in their overall wellness. Often, my clients come to me because they’re struggling with issues like hair loss, scalp sensitivity, breakouts, or simply feeling like their self-care has fallen to the bottom of the list. What makes them ideal is that they’re ready to slow down, trust the process, and commit to nurturing themselves from the inside out.

They value a holistic approach, where every treatment—whether it’s a head spa, facial, haircut, or smoothing treatment—is customized for their unique needs. They want results, but they also want the experience: the calm, the touch, the chance to reset while knowing their hair, scalp, and skin are being cared for with intention.

Ultimately, my ideal client is someone who believes that self-care is not a luxury, but a necessity. They’re the type of person who leaves Serenity Studio not only looking healthier, but feeling renewed—mind, body, and spirit. That transformation is what makes our connection so powerful.
