Meet Sally Van Swearingen

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sally Van Swearingen . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Sally , you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

In my book ‘ It’s Not Over Yet! Reclaiming your Real Beauty Power in your 40’s 50’s and Beyond’
when I talk about how my mama Eleanore shaped the woman so would become. My mother was generous of her time and she made sure people knew that she saw them, that she noticed them. People want to feel included. She could randomly talk to strangers I was mortified as a young teenager but grew to emulate this quality as I grew into a woman. I used this most especially in my own business as a makeup artist and later in my career a hairstylist too.
I see beauty in every woman. Each woman is my personal ‘ Barbie’ I love to bring out their individual beauty. I take all of my skills and go deep.,

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

We have the sweetest intimate salon in Old Town Newhall CA, The A LIST Hair and Makeup Studio. This is the space where ladies relax and allow the process. Updated Beauty Power!
I love to work individually with each client with her hair color, updated hair style and makeup.
When I’m not in my salon I am on location at a Sports Broadcast event ( ie LA Dodgers World Series, Kings Hockey Finals, Team USA Olympic Athlete promos) or working red carpet events for Local 706 Makeup and Hair Guild.
I also love to mentor and encourage new artists coming up.
With the industry challenges lately I have found a way to benefit my clients and artists who are struggling to find work… I bring in union hair stylists to collaborate on proms, quinceneras, weddings and red carpet events.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I love this question!!

1) showing up 2)being genuine 3) being early/ on time

Say yes and show up!
Be open to being helpful and learning new skills.
The number one thing employers/ producers/ bosses will remember was how easy did you make the experience?
I am a chatterbox but I have had to learn to be quiet and listen….when I go to any gig I leave my ego at the door and lead with how blessed I am to be a part of this project!
Having beauty and talent is a plus, but how you make people feel will be remembered.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Strong woman who have protected me from the storms that we inevitably have to go through as we grow in our careers. Surround yourself with educated passionate kind friends. Be there as well for them.
Be able to take feedback. As creatives we tend to think our way is the best way… it just may be, but take the time to listen to objective input.
