We were lucky to catch up with Salvador Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Salvador , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I love this question because I’m a very confident individual and it’s something I worked really hard on becoming. I came out at 14 which was something really brave to do at the time because being gay back when I was in school made you an easy target for bullies. I basically felt the entire school turn there backs on me and it forced me to learn how to forget about validation and look for it in myself. By 8th grade I had transformed into someone that was so unapologetic and confident that people naturally were drawn to my energy I was radiating. Another huge boost to my self esteem was my Mom & Dad who always told me I could be whatever I wanted to be but I needed to be the BEST. So I really have to thank my parents and those who didn’t like me for making me so confident!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Salvador Fox raised in Miami, Florida! At an early age I knew I had a special eye for creating. My talent wasn’t painting, singing or dancing but the ability to see the world in a unique way. When I first discovered photography I fell in love but I was so intimidated by all the technicalities that went into wielding a camera! When I first graduated high school I had decided to enter the world of cosmetology as a means to pay my bills and give me time to figure out what I wanted to do. One day I got hired by a fierce photographer from Argentina to work on high end fashion photoshoot for the day. Through out the photoshoot it made me realize this is what I wanted to create. So I struck a bargain with the photographer, she taught me the ways of photographing fashion and I’d offer her my styling abilities in return. After a year of training under her I knew that I was ready to start photographing my own ideas and working with models and brands that suit my aesthetic! Since then I’ve never put down my camera and have decided to try new things within my medium!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first skill I’d say that was most important was putting in the work and saying yes to every opportunity! You never know what you will learn or who you’ll shake hands with when taking on new opportunities. The 2nd thing is taking pride in your work and never settling or releasing mediocre work. Take your time to make things you’re proud of and are high quality! The last thing is to have the confidence to keep going, it takes a lot of pressure to form a Diamond.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The best thing for me to do when I’m feeling overwhelmed with work or creating is to take a step back and go to the gym. It’s the best way to remove yourself from the feeling, and also give you a moment to think of a different angle to tackle the project.
