Meet Sam Chaoel

We were lucky to catch up with Sam Chaoel recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sam, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?

Burnout always comes when you’re doing too much with too little rest and time for yourself. I’ve been dealing with burnout for a while now creatively so I’ve been giving myself a break and taking this time to rest before I drive back into my creative outlets. Forcing myself to create feels like a chore when burnout hits, it’s like I have no interest in creating and being a person who makes art and having it imbedded it into my career, is hard to feel myself go through that. The best way to break through is to take a break for whatever the burnout is coming from. To help with my burnout, I adjust my work hours during a new season to give myself a little break!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Sam and I own Wildflower Beauty Room in Clarkston! There I offer esthetics and makeup services, specializing in eyebrows and natural makeup. I love what I do and love meeting so many amazing people! My line of work can bring in anywhere from 5-12 people a day who are normally regulars. It’s so special to have people that regularly want to come see you to make them feel beautiful and confident whether that’s in the service or in conversation.
My makeup style is definitely more on the natural side which is perfect for bridal parties looking for a softer look! But that doesn’t stop me from being able to do any style! My natural-natural glam style is just what I’m known for!
My eyebrow shaping is a little different than most- I don’t wax or thread! I only use tweezers and scissors. Tweezing is the most gentle on the skin- no burns or tears, and is incredibly precise when it comes to shaping. My favorite service to book with a tweeze is a brow lamination!
I’m also excited to announce the launch of Wildflower Beauty Room’s first Signature Custom Facial!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Communication, consistency, and community

Being able to communicate with your guests on what they’re looking to achieve is a skill everyone should have and helps you to capture their vision much quicker. Communication in the way of being on top of responses as well! Nothing is more frustrating than trying to talk to an artist about a service and they’re not consistent with their reply’s at all. Having a good outlet for all your guests to communicate with you on is best.
Being consistent and creating routine helps to build your relationships with your guests! I always ask everyone when they leave if they’d like to re-book so we can keep a consistent schedule- especially for things like brow shaping! Consistency is what gets results!
Building a community in your industry is one of the best ways to grow as an artist. I’m in a salon suite currently and have about 30 other artists that work in that building. Creating relationships with other artists means referrals and working together on projects! Building those relationships can be very rewarding and bring cool ideas and creativity into your life as well, along with friendship!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

My busy season (usually June-December) can be quite overwhelming with the amount of guests I see from bridal to holiday! The best way for me to feel calm is by having control over my scheduling app and my calendar. I can feel quite overwhelmed on a fully packed esthetics day and for that I like to clean up my services as I go through them and I’ll sometimes set other ones up in other areas of my suite so I don’t have to mess with clean up and set up when my guest is waiting for me. Taking a moment to sit and breathe also does wonders as silly as it can sound!
