We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam Guillermo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam below.
Sam, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a transformative journey of self-discovery and growth in the world of photography and videography. My passion for capturing unforgettable moments and telling compelling stories led me to discover my true calling: empowering individuals and showcasing their unique beauty and strength. Through my work at NKDHMNS, based in Baltimore Maryland but also serving New York City, Washington DC, Virginia and much more, I specialize in boudoir photography, family portraits, wedding videography, and more, creating a space where people can connect with their authentic selves. Each session allows me to delve into personal narratives, highlighting the power of visual storytelling. This ongoing journey has been shaped by reflection, overcoming challenges, and celebrating triumphs, all of which have deepened my commitment to my purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Sam, a dedicated photographer and videographer based in Baltimore Maryland. My journey in visual storytelling began with a deep-seated passion for capturing life’s most precious moments. Today, I run NKDHMNS, a photography studio that specializes in boudoir photography, family portraits, wedding videography, and more. What excites me most about my work is the ability to empower individuals and help them see their own beauty and strength through my lens. Each session is a unique opportunity to connect with people and create lasting memories.
One of the most special aspects of my work is the intimacy and trust that develops between me and my clients. Whether it’s a boudoir session that celebrates body positivity and self-love or a family portrait that captures the essence of familial bonds, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
Currently, I’m thrilled about several new ventures and events at NKDHMNS. We’re partnering with several other small businesses in other states to have Pop-Up Sales in other states.
Moreover, I’m launching a two-day workshop in Maryland on September 21st and 22nd, focusing on education, business, and practical application in photography. The workshop will be held on a picturesque 35-acre property, providing stunning backdrops for hands-on learning experiences.
For those interested in a more personal touch, my Legacy Video service combines interviews and portrait sessions to document and preserve cherished memories. This service was inspired by my desire to capture my parents’ stories for my son, and it has since become a meaningful offering for others looking to preserve their own family histories.
At NKDHMNS, we are constantly evolving and expanding our offerings to better serve our clients and community. Follow us on Instagram and Vimeo to stay updated on our latest projects and events.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have been particularly impactful in my journey as a photographer and videographer:
1. **Empathy**: Understanding and connecting with people on a deeper level has been crucial. It allows me to capture genuine emotions and create a comfortable environment for my clients. To develop empathy, I recommend actively listening to others’ stories and experiences, and always approaching your work with compassion and an open heart.
2. **Technical Skill**: Mastering the technical aspects of photography and videography has been essential. From understanding lighting and composition to knowing how to use different equipment, these skills ensure high-quality results. For those early in their journey, I suggest investing time in learning the basics through online courses, workshops, and hands-on practice. Never stop experimenting and refining your techniques.
3. **Adaptability**: The ability to adapt to different situations and challenges has been vital. Whether it’s adjusting to unexpected weather conditions during a shoot or learning new software, being flexible and open to change is key. My advice is to embrace challenges as learning opportunities and to remain curious and willing to step out of your comfort zone.
For those early in their journey, here are a few tips on developing these qualities:
– **Empathy**: Engage with a diverse range of people and cultures. Volunteer, travel, and read extensively to broaden your perspective.
– **Technical Skill**: Dedicate time to continuous learning. Join photography clubs, participate in workshops, and seek feedback from more experienced professionals.
– **Adaptability**: Challenge yourself regularly. Take on different types of projects and work in varied environments. Reflect on each experience to understand what you learned and how you can improve.
By focusing on these areas, you can build a strong foundation for a successful career in photography and videography.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who values the art of storytelling and is open to embracing their authentic self. They understand the importance of capturing moments and emotions, not just for the sake of a photograph, but to create lasting memories that reflect their true essence. Here are a few key characteristics that make someone an ideal client for me:
1. **Open-Minded**: Someone who is willing to explore creative ideas and trust the process. They are open to trying new poses, settings, and concepts that will make their photos unique and meaningful.
2. **Authentic and Vulnerable**: Clients who are comfortable being themselves in front of the camera, and who are willing to show their true emotions and stories. This authenticity allows for more genuine and powerful images.
3. **Passionate**: Individuals who have a strong connection to their personal story and the memories they want to capture. Whether it’s a boudoir session celebrating self-love, a family portrait capturing special bonds, or a wedding video documenting a love story, their passion shines through.
4. **Collaborative**: Someone who enjoys working together to create something special. They are open to sharing their ideas and vision, and they appreciate the collaborative nature of the creative process.
5. **Appreciative of Art**: Clients who see photography and videography as more than just a service, but as an art form. They understand the value of investing in high-quality, professional work that will be cherished for years to come.
My ideal clients are those who are excited about the journey of capturing their story and who trust me to bring their vision to life. They are not just looking for a photographer or videographer, but a partner in creating meaningful and timeless memories.
