Meet Sam Hauser

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam Hauser. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam below.

Sam, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

As an artist, I’m always seeking inspiration and have trained myself to find beauty everywhere, even in overlooked places like the curve of someone’s nose or an old, run-down building. Recently, I’ve been particularly fascinated by thistles. There’s a unique, often overlooked beauty in the dried remnants of flowers. They tell a story of the past and a flower that once was, while simultaneously promising that beauty will come again.

Having worked through my own spine injury and my husband’s even more severe injuries, I am incredibly grateful to be healthy, walking, and working. The pain from that period certainly influences my art, but instead of painting something dark, I choose to depict the spirit of light and positivity that carried me through that time. I believe my optimism stems from my perspective.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am the owner (and sole employee) of Sam Hauser Art & Design LLC. I create fine art in an expressionist style that celebrates the spirit of creation. My work transcribes myths of the land and the skies into dynamic artworks that explore what it means to be human in an ever-changing world. I recently had my first solo exhibition, Wander & Wax, in Boulder, Colorado. A sense of longing and wonder permeates my art, hopefully speaking directly to your spirit by weaving a tapestry of shared emotions and experiences between us.

You can also catch me mural painting or at an occasional art fair. Stay tuned for the launch of my online art academy at the end of this year!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Drawing ability: When I first start art school I struggled to express myself properly because I lacked the skills to bring the ideas in my head to life on the canvas. A very wise professor told me to put down the paint (and the color that I LOVE!) and go back to the drawing board, quite literally. I worked hard, practiced, and now I have the skills to make anything I dream up come to life in my studio. This is why I’ll be releasing an online course and workshop this fall that teaches the proper way to draw a portrait. If you can properly draw a face, you can draw anything!

Grit: I knew that choosing the career of an artist would be difficult – and boy is it ever! In this world, you face constant competition, rejection, and criticism. You must become someone that follows their goals with unbridled determination and learn to live outside the judgements of other. It’s something I’m still working on, but it’s a skill you can hone over time.

Curiosity: To be an artist, or at least to be an interesting one, you have to be in a state of constant evolution. To create the most authentic work, I need to confront my ideas with curiosity and a willingness to explore the unknown. I’m constantly learning new things and pursuing new avenues for expressing myself.
