Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sam Posthumus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sam, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
The secret is that I don’t overcome it. I’m amazed every time someone purchases anything from me. People pay will for my art? What multiverse am I in?
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I focus mainly on visual art while primarily using acrylics, paint markers, and aerosol spray paint. My art is often inspired by people that I encounter throughout my day but I also draw heavily from graffiti, pop culture, and hip hop. I will always be a sucker for bright colors and bold black lines and my art definitely keeps that vibe. You can generally find me at various places and shows around Indianapolis if you’d like to see my work in person.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The qualities that I personally lean on through my journey are resiliency, persistence, and compassion. These have kept me going, kept me sane throughout everything whether major or minor. The advice I would give to anyone starting their art career would be to not undervalue themselves or their work as well as know that your art isn’t and won’t be for everyone and that is COMPLETELY okay. Nothing is for everyone. You’ll know when you find and connect with an audience.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mom has been the most amazing, supportive parent during my art career. Hell, she urged me into an art career before I ever had even considered it as a viable path. Mentally her support has helped immensely, especially knowing that she is a very logical and honest person.
