We were lucky to catch up with Sam Reti recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
As a musician, performing on stage was always a raw and open experience for me. Every time I stepped onto that stage, I was sharing something deeply personal, fully aware that things might not always go as planned. That vulnerability could be nerve-wracking, but it was also what made those moments so powerful. Over time, I found that repeated exposure to this kind of vulnerability helped me build resilience. I learned to trust my abilities and recover from mistakes. This process fostered a sense of confidence in me because I knew I had prepared and honed my craft enough to stand by my performance.
When I transitioned from being a musician to starting my own company, I realized that the experience was strikingly similar. I was taking an idea—something that started as just a thought—and turning it into something real that others could see, critique, and interact with. The stakes felt even higher because it was my vision on the line. But just like in music, the more I put myself out there, the more I built the confidence to handle whatever came my way.
For me, the key to building confidence has been preparation and belief in my work. Whether it was hours of practice or thorough market research, knowing I had done the groundwork gave me the confidence to present my work to the world. I knew that criticism was inevitable, but I also understood that it was part of the process and could lead to growth. Over time, I developed a thicker skin and learned to focus on the constructive aspects of feedback. This mindset has been crucial in helping me build my confidence and self-esteem.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder and CEO of Muzie.Live, a family-owned and operated software company dedicated to revolutionizing how music lessons are taught and experienced online. My journey into the tech world began with my background as a musician, where I spent years performing, teaching, and collaborating with other educators and musicians. This experience deeply shaped my understanding of what both teachers and students need to create meaningful and effective learning experiences.
What excites me most about Muzie.Live is how we’ve successfully merged the personal, interactive nature of in-person music lessons with the convenience and accessibility of online learning. Our platform not only supports live lessons with high-quality audio and video but also creates an environment that is engaging and inspiring, helping both students and teachers thrive in the digital space.
Right now, our focus is on expanding Muzie.Live to reach even more educators and students around the globe. We’re continually developing new features based on feedback from our community, ensuring that Muzie.Live evolves to meet the ever-changing needs of music educators and learners.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Learn How to Pivot: One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the ability to pivot when things aren’t going as planned. Right out of college, I launched a product and ran it for four years. Eventually, we had to shut it down, but instead of giving up, we pivoted and started Muzie.Live. This experience taught me that flexibility and resilience are crucial in any entrepreneurial journey. My advice to those early in their journey is to stay open to change and be willing to adapt your vision based on what you learn along the way. Success often comes from your ability to adjust your course, not just your original idea.
Cultivate Resilience and Patience: Building something meaningful takes time, and the road is often filled with setbacks and challenges. Whether it’s dealing with technical issues, market shifts, or financial constraints, resilience is key. You have to be patient with the process and understand that progress sometimes comes in small, incremental steps. My advice is to focus on long-term goals and not get discouraged by short-term obstacles. Develop a mindset that views challenges as opportunities to grow and refine your approach.
Master the Art of Communication: Effective communication is at the heart of building a successful business. Whether it’s articulating your vision to your team, pitching your product to investors, or understanding the needs of your customers, being able to convey your ideas clearly and persuasively is essential. For those just starting out, I recommend practicing your communication skills as much as possible—whether through public speaking, writing, or simply having more in-depth conversations with peers. The better you are at expressing your ideas and listening to others, the more effective you’ll be in leading your team and growing your business.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was believing in me, unconditionally. Their support has been the foundation of my journey. In fact, my dad believed in me so much that he became the co-founder of this business. When I came to him with the idea for my first venture, he didn’t just offer advice—he joined me, and we’ve been working hand in hand ever since. Having that level of trust and collaboration from my parents gave me the confidence to take risks and pursue my vision, knowing that they were right there with me every step of the way.
