We recently connected with Sam Wood and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I ran from my purpose for a very long time. From a very young age I had the sense that I was called to follow my father into ministry but I, absolutely, wanted nothing to do with it. I tried everything I could for 20 years to not go into ministry. However, as I look back now it seems that even the things that I did to avoid ministry trained me for ministry. I spent almost 10 years in the secular music industry working at a pretty high level, in a number of different management roles. I never thought that I would be making my own Christian music now, as a part of my ministry. The Lord trained me, even as I was running from Him, how to build a music ministry. During my time working in secular music and after, the Lord put many people in front of me that needed a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Little did I know that this would also lead me into ministry and the path that I’m now on pursing: a master’s degree in counseling psychology. Finally, even as I was trying to figure out how I was going to provide for my family, as I went back to school full-time and pursued a music ministry on the side, the Lord provided a full-time job at my church as the secretary and janitor. This opportunity is allowing me to learn all the ins and out of running a church while I train to go into ministry. Thus, even as I tried to run from my purpose, I was being trained for it. I have learned that through consistently striving for excellence in whatever I have done and not being afraid to pivot when needed, the Lord has prepared me for me purpose.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
While I am in school my main focus of brand building has been my music. I make music that is meant to encourage, uplift and entertain, while pointing to Jesus. I make music that doesn’t sound like most of what is considered CCM. I think that the music that I make has more of an honest edge and deals with a lot of the harder topics of life such was addiction and loss. I think there is space in christian music for more real, honest testimony music that tells stories of what the Lord has done even if those things are not always discussed in “polite company”. I don’t make worship music, I make testimony music.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Consistency, consistency, consistency. Those are the three most important qualities and skills. No matter what you do consistency is the most important thing. That is not to say that you can not change, pivot or reinvent but in doing those things you must maintain your focus on your overall goal. Consistency, consistency, consistency.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My wife. My wife is my best friend and partner. No one has ever taught me the importance of consistency as much as she has. She is a true American success story and one of the hardest workers I know. She has helped mold my adult life and path in ministry more than anyone else. I would not be who I am with out her.
