We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samantha Barela a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I think a lot of people think that confidence and self esteem come from impressing others, but I’ve come to realize that it comes from impressing yourself. It’s not always from huge accomplishments either, it’s most often the small things. Getting out of bed early to go to the gym, preparing a nourishing meal, folding the laundry as soon as it’s dry. Taking care of myself by doing the little things has allowed me to accomplish big things, and both of those have led to self respect, high self esteem, and confidence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m one of the cofounders of GreenDoor, an online marketplace that makes it easier for people to get high quality cannabis. My background is in sports nutrition and I have a huge focus on using the things we consume to nourish ourselves. I personally have had a hard time finding cannabis that makes me feel good and I don’t want to miss out on all the great benefits. For now, I’ve been using non psychoactive cannabinoids to achieve this. With GreenDoor, we are helping people like me, and many others with different situations, get the cannabis that works best for them. Whether they have a hard time traveling to a dispensary, are in a state that criminalizes cannabis, or they’ve just been frustrated with the options they have available to them, we provide high quality options that are inclusive for anyone’s situation. One thing I’m really excited about is our recent movie night launch. Greendoor has curated a treat yo self type of night with local dispensary products, a free movie, snacks, and more to elevate that way people can consume.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important areas that have impacted my journey are support, passion, and self development. Giving and receiving support are under appreciated skills. No one can achieve the best things in life alone. Finding and being around passion will keep you going. Self development will allow you to become the person that can get where you want to be. For people early in their journey, remembering to take care of the essentials like your physical and mental health, and strengthening your relationships, will pay the dividends.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I think it’s better to go all in on our strengths because I believe in teamwork. Working with others that compliment your top skills creates magic. It also strengthens some of your weaker skills. I have found that using your top skills to their fullest and working with others that are better than you in other areas is miles more impactful than trying to get better at anything by yourself.
