We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Cauchy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Samantha, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, keeping that creative spark shining comes down to life balance. In more recent years, my creativity has been riding high because I am giving myself the proper rest and self care. I am saying yes to the things I love outside of art and creating in my studio. I am investing in myself through bodywork, picking up a book when it calls, getting outside and moving everyday, being confident in my boundaries and saying no to what does not spark excitement.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an artist, specializing in oil painting. My home and studio, which are so beautifully intertwined, are located just outside of Boulder. I feel grateful each day to live somewhere where I can gather inspiration right out my back door. My subject matter is primarily made up of plants, animals, and humans with a heavy sprinkle of magic and mysticism. The best conclusion I’ve come to in describing my style would be imaginative realism. I started my painting journey around eight years old and continued to study it in school throughout college where I pursued my BFA. After college, I focused on a specific indirect painting technique that combines layers of egg tempera or casein and oil paint. I am currently painting full time and have my art in various galleries and storefronts across the state. During most of the year I share my work at many art markets. My goal in the next couple of years is to build up a collection in preparation for a solo show! I hope to see you there when the time comes.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being organized, resilient, and having an open mind. For me, being a somewhat Type A person and owning a successful business where I am the head of all departments, organization is huge. I would not be able to wear these many hats without my planner, lists, etc. For resiliance, I mean this in a way of never giving up. I have had multiple times where I have been denied into a gallery show or been accepted to vend at a market. You’ve gotta be able to bounce back after what may feel like total rejection…it’ not. Just not the right time or fit at the moment. Have an open mind to everything! The learning journey never stops.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for more opportunities / new communities to share my art with! I recently have been working on indoor murals for businesses and would love to expand on this. It means a lot to me for my art to be experienced by people from all different walks of life.
