We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Davison. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Samantha , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered my purpose as a pet stylist through a combination of personal experience and professional exposure. My journey started with my dog, who inspired me to learn more about pet care, grooming, and how important it is for pets to feel comfortable and look their best. As I gained more hands-on experience working at pet care facilities, I realized how much I loved helping pets feel confident and cared for. This made me realize that becoming a pet stylist wasn’t just a job for me—it was a passion. The combination of personal connection with my dog and the professional environment truly shaped my purpose in this field.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey as a pet stylist are:
Attention to Detail: As a pet stylist, the ability to observe and focus on the small details is crucial. Whether it’s ensuring the pet’s comfort or achieving the perfect trim, paying attention to every aspect of the grooming process can make a big difference. Early in my career, I learned that small things, like the length of a coat or the right balance of products for different types of fur, can significantly impact the final result.
Communication Skills: Developing strong communication skills with both pet owners and the pets themselves was essential. Understanding the pet’s temperament, listening to the owner’s preferences, and providing clear instructions or advice helped build trust and ensured that both the pet and owner were satisfied. This helped me foster long-term relationships with clients and ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.
Technical Skills & Continuing Education: Grooming is a skill that evolves with trends, new products, and techniques. Staying up to date with new tools and methods has been key to providing the best service. I made it a priority to continually develop my technical skills through workshops, certifications, and learning from other experienced professionals in the industry.
Advice for those early in their journey:
Focus on Practice and Patience: Developing your technical and artistic skills takes time. Don’t rush the learning process. Take the time to work on your techniques, and remember that every pet you work with can teach you something new. Practice consistently and be patient with yourself.
Build a Strong Network: Surround yourself with experienced mentors and peers who can provide support, feedback, and share knowledge. Engaging with a community, whether through social media or local pet grooming groups, will keep you motivated and help you learn from others’ experiences.
Stay Open to Learning: The pet grooming industry is always evolving. To remain competitive and provide the best care for pets, it’s important to stay open to learning new techniques, tools, and trends. Invest in further education through classes, seminars, or online resources to continue growing in the field.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The person who has been most helpful in helping me overcome challenges and build the essential skills to succeed as a pet stylist is my husband. He has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey, both emotionally and practically. He has encouraged me to push through difficult moments and constantly reassured me that I have the talent to succeed. He also took an active role in helping me with the logistics of my career, whether it was assisting with pet grooming supplies, helping me organize my schedule, or providing feedback on my techniques. His unwavering belief in my abilities has truly made a difference, allowing me to focus on growing my skills and honing my craft.
