We were lucky to catch up with Samantha Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism is deeply rooted in my belief in the power of architecture to positively transform communities. I see each project as an opportunity to make a tangible impact, creating spaces that not only serve their intended purpose but also foster a sense of belonging and equality. This perspective fuels my determination to overcome challenges and find innovative solutions.
Furthermore, my experiences have shown me the potential for positive change. From working on public projects for the LA County Department of Mental Health to embarking on joint ventures to address affordable housing. I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of thoughtful, community-centered design.
Additionally, my educational background and exposure to world-class architectural firms have instilled in me a sense of purpose and possibility. The combination of technical knowledge and creative vision developed during my studies at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as my time at renowned firms like Gehry Partners, Gensler, and Arquitectonica, have reinforced my confidence in the impact architecture can have.
Finally, volunteering as a commissioner on the South Pasadena Design Review Board and as an advisor for the City of Los Angeles Professional Volunteer Program and the L.A. Works Elevate Program allows me to directly engage with my community. This hands-on involvement reinforces my belief in the potential for positive change through architecture, community involvement, while reinforcing my optimism of our future.
Overall, my optimism is driven by a genuine belief in the capacity for architecture to create inclusive, equitable, and thriving communities. It’s this belief that motivates me to continue pushing boundaries in my field.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
What excites me the most about my work is the potential to create spaces that not only serve their intended function but also contribute to the greater good of the community.
At Design With Skill, we’re dedicated to designing buildings that build communities. We believe in the power of architecture to shape environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also inclusive, accessible, and affordable for all members of society. Our approach is guided by four key principles: technical practicality, aesthetic acumen, budget sensibility, and environmental sensitivity.
One of the most exciting developments for us is our work with the Housing Department in the City of Pasadena for a new affordable housing program. This pilot program partners with local property owners to add an affordable accessory dwelling unit to their properties in exchange for low interest construction loan. This project represents a significant step towards addressing the housing crisis in our community.
In addition to our architecture services, we’ve also expanded to offer consulting services for disabled access compliance as a Certified Access Specialist (CASp). This reflects our commitment to ensuring that our designs are inclusive and accessible for all users.
Overall, our mission is to create spaces that foster equality, accessibility, and community well-being. We’re passionate about the potential for architecture to make a meaningful impact, and that’s what drives us every day.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to approach challenges with a creative and analytical mindset has been crucial. In architecture, we constantly encounter complex problems that require innovative solutions. Developing strong problem-solving skills early on and honing them over time is essential. To improve, I recommend seeking out diverse challenges and always being open to different perspectives. Embrace every opportunity to tackle complex issues and learn from each experience.
Community Engagement and Advocacy: Understanding the needs and desires of the communities we serve is paramount. Actively engaging with local stakeholders, being a part of review boards, and volunteering have been invaluable in shaping my approach to design. For those early in their journey, I encourage you to immerse yourself in your community. Attend public meetings, participate in local events, and seek out opportunities to contribute to the betterment of your surroundings. This firsthand knowledge will greatly inform your work.
Continuous Learning and Adaptability: The field of architecture is dynamic, with evolving technologies, materials, and design trends. Being committed to lifelong learning and staying updated with industry advancements has been crucial. It’s important to be adaptable and open to change. Attend workshops, conferences, and engage with emerging technologies. Don’t be afraid to embrace new methods and approaches, as they can lead to breakthroughs in your work.
For those at the early stages of their journey, my advice is to be curious, persistent, and committed to growth. Seek out mentors and diverse experiences. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and expand your skill set. Remember that every project, no matter how small, holds valuable lessons. Finally, never underestimate the power of collaboration and networking. Building a supportive professional network can provide invaluable guidance and open doors to new opportunities.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who values community-focused design, appreciates the importance of accessibility, and is committed to creating spaces that have a positive impact on the people who use them. They are open to collaboration, prioritize inclusivity, and have a long-term vision for their project.
