We were lucky to catch up with Samantha Ward recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
In such a saturated market you learn that everyone Professionally you know deals with imposter syndrome. Did I over come it? To be honest I continuously overcome it. Its not something id necessarily would say would get cured from but learn to manage life with imposter syndrome.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
In a world where moments slip away too quickly, I strive to be a beacon for families looking to preserve their cherished memories. As a dedicated photographer, wife, and mother of three, I skillfully balance the joys and challenges of family life with my passion for capturing beautiful events. My creative sessions go beyond mere photography; they are heartfelt experiences that transform fleeting moments into lasting treasures, whether it’s a joyful family portrait or the magic of a wedding day.
With a keen understanding of the local creative landscape, I’ve partnered with fellow photographers through the NEPA Camera Group, founded by Jon Edwards. For me, this collaboration is not just about competition; it’s about building a supportive community where creativity can thrive. I truly believe that the photography industry can be a place of collaboration rather than rivalry, allowing us to navigate the complexities of a saturated market with a spirit of camaraderie.
I recognize the diverse needs of my clients, from budget-conscious families to those seeking luxury services. By learning the intricacies of pricing and positioning, I strive to set myself apart without overshadowing my peers. My mission is to create an environment where everyone can flourish, sharing knowledge and experiences to elevate our craft collectively.
Through my lens, I’m not just capturing images; I’m weaving stories that resonate with families, all while fostering a community of creatives who uplift one another. My journey is one of balance, passion, and collaboration, creating a vibrant tapestry of memories and support that enriches my life and those around me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, I’ve identified three qualities that have been most impactful: who you know, what you’re willing to learn, and how much failure you’re willing to endure.
Who You Know: Building a network of supportive peers and mentors has been invaluable. Collaborating with other photographers and creatives through groups like the NEPA Camera Group has opened doors and provided a sense of community. My advice to those starting out is to actively seek connections. Attend local events, join creative groups, and don’t hesitate to reach out to others in your field. Relationships can lead to invaluable opportunities and insights.
What You’re Willing to Learn: The photography industry is always evolving, and staying curious has been crucial for my growth. Embrace every chance to expand your skills, whether through workshops, online courses, or hands-on practice. Don’t shy away from feedback; it’s a powerful tool for improvement. My suggestion is to make learning a continuous part of your journey—set goals for what you want to master and seek resources that challenge you.
How Much Failure You’re Willing to Endure: Resilience is key in this industry. There will be setbacks, whether it’s a missed opportunity or an event that doesn’t go as planned. Embrace failure as a learning experience. Each setback can teach you something valuable if you’re willing to reflect on it. My advice here is simple: don’t let fear of failure hold you back. Take risks and view each challenge as a stepping stone toward your goals.
Lastly, it’s crucial to remember that while chasing your dreams, you should never let them lead to financial ruin. Avoid plunging into a career based solely on brand recognition. Understand the financial aspects of your business and set realistic expectations. Prioritize building a sustainable career that allows you to grow and thrive without compromising your well-being. Focus on your unique strengths and values, and let them guide your path.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been learning not to stress about getting ahead in marketing. Balancing my photography with another job I love has given me a unique perspective. I’ve come to realize that I don’t need to pressure myself into achieving immediate financial success. Instead, I can focus on honing my craft and building genuine connections within my community.
This shift in mindset has allowed me to enjoy the creative process more fully, without the weight of unrealistic expectations. I’m working towards the goal of one day retiring from my 9-5 to fully embrace photography. I hope that by the time I make that transition, my name will be recognizable enough to keep me busy. Until then, I’m committed to growing steadily and enjoying every moment of this journey, knowing that success is a marathon, not a sprint. Having a supporting Immediate family both my clan and my parents and inlaws have made this growth something inspiring to keep going.
