We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samira Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samira , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I look for art in everything, if something inspires me, I get to work immediately. I love to create, music is one of my strong suits so whenever I can, I’m working on that. I do feel like it’s a good idea to take a break and step back. That’s one way of keeping my creativity alive, being pushed doesn’t always help me, I need to be able to work at my own pace.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an actress, currently in a performing arts college. I’m on the path of getting my bachelor’s of fine arts. What I mainly focus on though is making music. I’ve been creating and writing songs since I was younger, the art of poetry played a big role as I was growing up. I utilized what I knew about poems to write music. As of now, I’m producing my own work and hoping to push it out to others in the next year. It’s been a pretty difficult yet amazing journey.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Continuing after being told no multiple times. Still having the confidence to learn and grow as an actor even when it was hard. Hearing notes and criticism from others and wanting to work harder. It was tough at times but I kept pushing forward. Honestly, working on myself helped me be able to hear what others had to say and not let it affect me so much. This industry is hard but you just have to keep moving forward in order to get where you want to be.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents supported my choice in acting and music. Knowing that they had my back was all I needed. My mom and dad are my biggest supporters and I felt that I could really become an actor and be able to share my music with others. My dad would listen to my sounds in his free time and share how much he loved it, encouraging me to keep going. Showcasing it to his friends with a smile on his face. My mom helping with my self tapes and taking me to auditions. These two people caring for what talent I had to share was the impact.
