Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samirah Bonaparte. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Samirah, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?

I overcame getting laid off by creating brands and developing businesses that allow me to still generate income without the need of a boss. Brands that consist of being a Mobile Hairstylist, a Digital Product Designer, a Social Media Influencer, Skincare Specialist and a Herbalist. I turned my hobbies into my salary ,so I can have a great time and still make money. My business owner journey is movie itself. All I have to do is film, edit ,share and go with the flow. The one thing to remember most of all is that when one door closes…another one is sure to open.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

What I do is very exciting! I have just launched my first Shopify website showcasing all 3 of my Business Collections. Including my “Luxury Babe Blog” which used to be called the “Wifi Money Blog” but since the reboot we’ve went with a more cutesy name. I have recently added print on demand products using Printify with eye catching graphic designs. HAIRMAINTENANCEBYMB is a mobile hairstyling business that is expanding very fast. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were resilience, self confidence, and adaptability. In business, setbacks are inevitable-whether the project fails, you have financial strains, or your industry changes. A businesswoman should be able to stay focused, maintain her drive, and bounce back stronger after obstacles. This quality helps navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship or corporate leadership, making sure she stays on top of her goals.
Confidence is essential for decision making, leadership, and managing relationships within the business world. A business woman who believes in herself is more likely to take calculated risks, assert her ideas, negotiate effectively, and inspire others to do the same. She has to be able to trust her instincts and speak up, even in environments where her ideas or leadership may be challenged. Confidence is key to asserting authority and building credibility in male dominated industries or environments in higher stakes.
Furthermore, being adaptable means having the flexibility to evolve, learn new skills, and pivot when necessary. Things in business are constantly changing-whether it’s through technological advancements, market shifts ,or new global trends. When you can quickly adjust your strategies, take advantage of new opportunities, and lead your team through periods of transformation that is what makes a successful business. Be open to constructive criticism and feedback ,however don’t seek validation from people who aren’t where you want to be. Even so, trust your instincts and be prepared for what comes next. You never know what will happen in the future!

How would you describe your ideal client?

The ideal client for me, communicates their preferences,needs and concerns openly and clearly. I expect clear communication so that I can ensure they are satisfied with their results. A client who listens attentively and ask questions and allows me to listen and ask questions makes the service a lot less stressful on the both of us. A client who values my knowledge of products ,techniques ,and trends is perfect for me. I like consistent clients who return for hair maintenance appointments such as (Loc Retwists, Boho Locs, Wig installations, Knotless Braids, and any other services on my booking site) This also ensures steady income streams for my business which makes me really happy!
Of course, having a respectful and courteous client is ideal. Someone who is positive and understanding of my time, space and boundaries makes a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Lastly, a client who is open minded and willing to experiment different hairstyles or skin care treatments allows for a more creative relationship between the myself and the client. These characteristics not only make the professional relationship smooth but also help ensure long term satisfaction and mutual respect between the client and I.
