Meet Samjah Iman

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samjah Iman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samjah below.

Samjah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I find my purpose through my spirit. Whatever feels good to my gut and soul, I know it’s my purpose. Writing feeds my soul, therefore, it’s my purpose. Raising my son feeds my soul, and it’s my purpose. Whatever that one thing is that you will do without getting money from it, and it also helps someone else’s life in some kind of way, that thing is a part of your purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a writer/journalist. I write mostly style and beauty stories, but I also get to interview interesting people like Jill Scott, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Fe Noel, Billy Porter, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Doulas, Black women making waves in their communities, CEOs, etc. I love to come up with different compelling ways to tell a story. Words are powerful, and when they are written down, they become cemented in history. My plan is to cement my work in history so that someone years from now can read it and pull some sort of inspiration from it.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful skills in my journey that I still use today are knowledge of self, knowledge of my craft, and spiritual knowledge. I first had to understand myself and how I operated to pursue my goals. Then, I had to and still have to study my craft profusely. And my spiritual knowledge keeps me grounded and guides me through all the ups and downs of my journey.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m overwhelmed, I do nothing. Doing nothing is an act of faith. Stillness provides rest, answers, and a chance for God to intervene.
