Meet Sammie B

We recently connected with Sammie B and have shared our conversation below.

Sammie, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

For as long as I could remember, I’ve battled with depression. I used to cope in a much more destructive way than I do now, thankfully. I’ve been able to overcome substance use disorder as well as my depression, and getting in a better place with both of those things went hand in hand. Whenever I feel myself spiraling into the darkness of depression, I’m able to utilize creative self-expression along with prayer, meditation, and reaching out to those in my support network. My mental health is now at a stable state due to experiencing it’s possibility. I’ve learned how to channel most of my thoughts and feelings into my music and art.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a creator who does not stand for being put in a box because I believe there are no boundaries to self-expression and art overall. Being a multi-faceted artist and musician means I am a wearer of many hats. Throughout 2025, I’m releasing a whole lot of music which primarily showcases my rapping and beat producing. Each single is a part of a project titled, “RARA AVIS” which exudes the power of one being their most fun and vibrant, unapologetic self. Everything I create comes from my soul, I don’t aim to be anyone but my authentic self and my goal is to encourage the world to do the same. The RARA AVIS merch bundle is now available for pre-order which includes a signed vinyl, hoodie, poster, stickers, buttons, digital downloads and more!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think nothing really compares to having “a knowing” or “the knowing” that you’re meant to do something. When you know something is meant for you, it’s natural to follow that and bring it into life. I think visualization is important because it allows us to tap into the future and see the vision in our mind. I feel that the more real that can look and feel to you will eventually come to fruition so long as you stay true to that. If you are really serious about being successful in whatever your passionate about then you must be willing to sacrifice things that don’t align with who we must be and surround ourselves with in order to achieve our dreams. So, another thing I would say is important is to be willing to be alone many times and for however long is necessary along the journey. Sometimes we need to let go of people, places, and things which feels uncomfortable but it’s all contributing to our evolution. Lastly, just be yourself. There’s nothing more attractive than someone who is confident in what they bring to the table. When we are our truest selves, we attract those who will be supportive or at least inspired and that’s a beautiful thing.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents instilled such an unconditional love within me and showed me what love should look and feel like. I have been empowered by them more than anyone else as I aim, more than anything else, to make them proud. My father passed away 12 years ago but I’m grateful to have had the time I did have with him. I feel him living through me which, I believe, allows me to be so hardworking and determined. My parents have given me strength to continue pushing through each day and have fanned the flame within me to be the best person I could be and to live a passion-driven lifestyle. What they’ve done for me is more than I could ever repay or even truly put into words.
