We were lucky to catch up with Sammie Leigh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sammie, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
I’d have to say some of my favorite things to do for self-care would be either getting out in nature or having a true “self-care” day at home. Camping is a wonderful way to unwind and get away. The tranquility of lying in a hammock with a good book, listening to nature or some quiet music; But also, making a warm Epsom-salt bath with your favorite essential oils, lighting a candle and an incense and turning on some music or a favorite movie/show can be quite relaxing and enjoyable (especially when it’s cold outside). It really is good to take some down time for yourself to slow down and take a breath. Life is so busy, time goes by faster every day, it seems. Taking some time to yourself to refresh is absolutely necessary.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Samantha Likes, also known as Sammie Leigh, has been singing since she could talk. She has been singing since her teens and early twenties, and has been pursuing her passion for music through various life lessons. In 2019, she spent a few months in Iowa, where she began her lyric writing journey with the song “Bad Habits.” This song was inspired by her depression and the need to handle emotions. In 2020, she released her first original song and began performing live. Later, she released a lighter song, “Breathe Easy,” which focused on taking a breath and slowing down. In 2021, she recorded a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” with The Chewy Center, a local band; which is a wonderful blend of funky rock. Her song ‘Prevail’, released in 2021, is a funky-poppy up-beat track about being comfortable and happy in one’s own skin. She has also released music videos for her songs “Prevail” and “Bad Habits” on YouTube. In 2022, she began her guitar journey with a month of lessons from her partner, and her current goal is to practice until she is comfortable enough to perform and start writing lyrics for her own guitar creations.
A note from Sammie: I have to just stop and say THANK YOU, to ALL the people who have supported, shown up, helped, given advice, just even given a minute of your time.. THANK YOU. For EVERYTHING. It is so much more appreciated than you will ever know. There have been many that have helped along the way and I will forever be grateful to each and every one of you.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Listening. Connection and talking with other artists, as well as producers. Taking in all of it along the way, because there is A LOT to learn. About the industry, about what your lovely fans would like to see, about what you can do to keep moving forward and continuing to grow. Guitar. It has absolutely been such a beautiful and amazing learning experience. Not only learning how to play the instrument but also creating your own sounds and experimenting with different melodies. It is therapeutic growth.
Kindness. Gratitude. To be humble. These are important qualities. We never know what people are going through and being kind can change somebody’s entire day.
The best advice I have would be to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. Even when it’s hard, even when you feel like you’re not making any progress. Keep going. Keep practicing. But also, it is okay to take time off for yourself, especially if you need it. Find a good balance and keep at it. You are capable. You are worthy. You can do it.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Loving me. Unconditionally. Believing in me.
Showing up.
Letting me be whatever, whoever I wanted to be, without judgement.
Showing me all the music, the wonderful, beautiful music.
Being patient and understanding and never giving up on me.
