We were lucky to catch up with Sammy Maximin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sammy, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I didn’t have it easy. And I didn’t have excuses. My mother was very strict on studying and rehearsing. By the time I was 8 years old, I was hopping the train to New York multiple times a week acting and modeling. I had auditions and bookings. I played the violin, so I was in rehearsals 3x a week. When it came to education, my mother wanted me in prep school – so in order to gain financial assistance I had to participate in the most rigorous education program for 2 years where I went to school on Saturdays and 6 weeks in the summer to study and prepare for an exam that would allow me in prep school. I would have homework, tests and evaluations. All whilst maintaining my grades in the school I was already in.
So there was a lot of pressure.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a professional Actor/Model & Music Artist/Producer. I’ve been acting & modeling professionally since I was 5 years old and I’ve been a professional music producer for 10 years.
I live in the creative. And I’m lucky enough I can support my family through my gifts. That was my biggest prayer and it came true. My goal is to reach billions with my music and perform in every single country. The music I make is for a global audience and is unique to me. I believe every artist has their own unique sound, and it’s up to them to go on that hero’s journey of becoming who they’re meant to be. You gotta be willing to go all in.
When it comes to Modeling & Acting, the goal is to also reach billions. I’ve gotten to work for almost every major brand and company and now the goal is to be apart of major franchises & IP for these companies. IP such as James Bond, DC Comics & Marvel are just a few of my targets. I want to be apart of everything I’m passionate about.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Faith, Tenacity, and time management.
Every morning and every evening, I say 5 things I’m grateful for, without fail. Gratitude is life changing. Be grateful for everything in your life. Look around, you’d be surprised how blessed you are. Believe in God or your higher power and make kindness #1. If you’re moving in love, you’re on the winning side and you will NEVER lose.
Tenacity for all the hard times. it’s gonna get hard. It’s gonna suck at times but if you have grit, nothing will stop you. Think of it like working out – you need resistance to build muscle and the pros understand that. They’re very resilient. They show up everyday and give everything. Apply the same formula.
Time management goes beyond practicing for 30 mins a day. it’s making use of every bit of your time. Post instead of scrolling. Forget vacation. Use all the energy and drive you have for laying on a beach for your goals. Instead of spending money on booze and food on the weekends, use that time to submit to jobs, make more music, audition, work out, self care; replace the bad stuff with good stuff.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I wouldn’t be here today without my wife. I don’t know if I’d even be alive. She’s been there since I was 18 years old and this year we turn 30 together. I am very grateful the first month of dating I was honest about who I was and my goals and dreams. We realized we had the same dream and we’ve been pursuing it together ever since.
Tajah is the definition of a queen. Not only beautiful but strong and full of grace and nurture. She’s helped me see what really matters in life. Noticing the blue and red birds. Standing outside in the sun watching the ones you love play. I notice everything now because of her. I pay attention to the details. I used to move fast through life, never slowing down, always on the move, hardly sleeping. I can sleep at night when I’m next to Tajah.
She’s my saving grace. She’s my love.
