We were lucky to catch up with Samson Poet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Samson, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through the use of my voice. When I was a young Bronx kid I always knew that I wanted to impact lives I just didn’t fully know in what capacity. As I got older and immersed myself in the art of poetry, music and writing I started to realize the power of words and the affects they can have on ourselves and others. Through all of my life struggles, losses and pains putting a pen to paper seemed to be the best therapy to push myself out of dark places.
In my late teens I began writing and recording Hip Hop music and poetry. I would let a select few listen to those records but most of it I kept personal. It wasn’t until college that I got the courage to actually grab a microphone in public. During my time in college I began to read my original works to people. Each time I shared I was taken back by the reactions and feedback I received. Seeing this impact really touched me.
I have this belief that I was placed here to awaken people through my writings. Being a poet has always been in my DNA. As I’ve gotten older and started to dive deeper into my own history and culture. I began learning that I come from a long bloodline of great writers. My Puerto Rican heritage is embedded in the power poetry. My people have always been poets, freethinkers, and revolutionaries. Understanding this has given me the strength and motivation to continue to use my voice in every way. I was born to influence and my purpose is to inspire others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the owner/founder of a company called Royalty And Purpose Living LLC also known as RAP LIVING. Which is a Bronx born lifestyle brand and platform.
We curate different types of visual and spoken art showcases, events and activations. These curated events focus on spotlighting artists and wordsmiths of all walks. We create safe spaces for freethinkers to unapologetically voice themselves.
This company welcomes creators who want to elevate and push the envelope in every medium. Check out @rap.living on Instagram to take a deeper dive into our world of artistry and lyricism.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I had to choose 3 qualities, skills and/or areas of knowledge that have made my journey impactful it would have to be persistence, hard work and faith.
I’ve always been very committed in my vision even during moments where the light at the end of the tunnel wasn’t so clear. I’ve had my fair share of trials and errors over the years but still I’ve never given up. I am grateful for my willingness to always push forward. When a person really wants something a certain level of desire and commitment is required.
Hard work is one that might sound cliche but I’ve always grown up being told that “Hard work always beats talent when talent ain’t working.” I’ve carried this quote with me since a little boy and it’s been instilled in me even at my adult age.
The last one I consider very important because without faith you will get no where in life. You must believe in what you are creating. I’ve been visualizing my life and masterplan for as long as I can remember. I wake up each day with the same belief that I can achieve anything. These keys factors have molded me into the man, creator and leader I am today. For anyone who is just starting out with their journey I’d recommend implementing these 3 things and in time you will go places.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me is introduce me to music and culture. I know that kids are sponges so for me being the creator I am today I must thank them for the influences they gave me since birth. My parents used to play all kind of music when I was growing up. I was always surrounded by the art of lyrics and sounds so much that it has shown in my taste for different genres. I grew up listening to Salsa, Pop, Freestyle, Hip Hop, Jazz and so much more. These music influences mixed with my internal love for speaking, reading and writing have made me who I am.
Our parents play a major role in our development. I thank them for not only surrounding me with great music but they always had me and my siblings around the arts. The love they had for it birthed the passion within us. This I would say has been the most impactful thing my parents have ever done for me aside from always telling me to believe.
