We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samuel Boyar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samuel below.
Hi Samuel, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
I beat creativity blocks in a couple ways. Being around other creative people always helps, seeing others that are inspired and pursuing careers as artists is always motivating and helps me get out of a rut. Sometimes it also helps to not force creativity and let it come to you. If you’re not feeling inspired, spending time doing other things can often help you feel creative again.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a freelance cinematographer/filmmaker. I work on short films, music videos, web series, or really anything that involves cameras. I love that there’s no defined schedule and how different every project is, and all the different people that I get to work with.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality is kindness. When your job is working with other people all day, being nice is what separates good experiences from bad ones. Even if I’d rather be upset, being kind to the people I work with is super important.
Knowledge of cameras is obviously important for a cinematographer. Spending my free time staying knowledgeable about the latest cameras and camera accessories helps me stay current.
I think that focus is one of the most important skills for working in film. When you’re working 12-14 hour days, being able to stay focused on the work and staying efficient is really hard but also really important for making good work.
I think the best way to develop these skills/qualities is just practicing
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking to connect with new people. Directors who want to make something are always people that I want to make a connection with, or other cinematographers who need crew.
