We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samyra Alexander a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samyra , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’ve learned to be successful in a room even when I’m the only one in the room that looks like me after hearing someone say don’t be afraid to take up space when at a table, spread out your water bottle, notepad, pen, and purse, and show the world you’re here.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a psychotherapist and author who loves writing about characters struggling with mental health issues to bring awareness to the challenges that comes with mental illness. I have nine self published books and working on two audiobooks. My author motto: I write characters readers want to strangle.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important skills were research, dedication, and willingness to face failure. Lots of online research went into how to self published my books, and market them. I’m still learning. Dedication pushed me to not give up when I didn’t get as many sales or reviews as desired. I faced failure by pushing pass fear of what others might think of my work. Holding my first book in hand let me know my work wasn’t in vain.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
There’s not been one person who has helped me. My readers, beta readers, and a few authors have been crucial in providing feedback on my books that’s helped improve my writing, the appearance of my book covers, and provided me with information I didn’t know concerning publishing, marketing etc.
