Meet Sanatan Kadakia

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sanatan Kadakia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sanatan, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

While I was pursuing my master’s degree in the UK, I had the unique experience of working as a projectionist at one of the world’s largest cinema chains. This role not only deepened my appreciation for film but also allowed me to witness the intricate processes involved in bringing stories to the big screen.

During my time as a projectionist, I discovered the immense power that film holds in shaping global culture and influencing social perceptions. I saw firsthand how the flickering images on the screen could evoke a wide range of emotions and thoughts, ultimately transforming the way individuals view the world around them. That’s when I felt a compelling urge to contribute to its evolution and to help create stories that would resonate with audiences across the globe.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for the chance to participate in this interview. I currently reside in Houston, Texas, a city I regard as one of the most outstanding in the United States, recognized for its dynamic culture and flourishing industries.

My journey into the entertainment industry commenced in 2013 when my enthusiasm for filmmaking prompted me to engage with a local production company in Houston. Eager to enhance my understanding of the behind-the-scenes elements of film production, I volunteered as a production assistant on various corporate and commercial projects. This practical experience provided me with invaluable insights into the industry and reinforced my dedication to pursuing a career in film.

In 2018, I established Hidden Ridge Productions, where I concentrate on investing in Broadway productions, independent feature films, and documentaries. This endeavor has allowed me to further my commitment to the arts while contributing to the cinematic landscape.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

When I first thought about entering the film industry, I felt anxious about my chances of success. I had no connections, no roadmap, and no idea how to navigate this world. I feared that every misstep would make me look foolish or inadequate.

Over time, I chose to focus on my passion. I spent a lot of time developing my skills and learning more about what I loved. This wasn’t easy, and it pushed me to face my fears. Gradually, I built resilience by trusting myself and understanding my values. This journey helped me become stronger and more confident, allowing me to create my own path, despite the uncertainties I faced.

My advice for those embarking on their creative journey is to passionately pursue your dreams with unwavering determination and resilience. Along the way, you will undoubtedly face various challenges—some might feel overwhelming—but it is crucial to keep moving forward despite setbacks. If your first attempt doesn’t succeed, don’t be discouraged. Instead, consider writing another screenplay that explores a new idea or theme, shooting a different short film that captures your vision more effectively, or seeking out opportunities to collaborate with a new crew that can bring fresh perspectives. Each of these efforts is a valuable stepping stone that not only hones your skills and improves your craft but also helps you build deeper connections with your audience, ultimately guiding you toward success in your artistic endeavors.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

In every project I have been involved in so far, I make it a point to be present on set with the filmmakers. I strive to learn their craft, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have collaborated with remarkable filmmakers from around the world. I believe they are with me on this journey, and I am grateful to be a part of theirs.

We share a fundamental value: the right to speak, create, question, and criticize without fear of censorship. This is the foundation of art, journalism, innovation, democracy, and social progress.

On a personal note, I want to express my deep gratitude to my wife, Niyati Kadakia, who has always been my greatest supporter. She has stood by me with unwavering belief as I navigate the complexities of my journey. From the very beginning, she has encouraged me to pursue my passions and carve my path, no matter how challenging it may seem. During difficult times, she has offered genuine understanding, reminding me that I am never alone in facing life’s challenges.

I am profoundly thankful for her endless love and encouragement, which have not only bolstered my confidence but also made this journey far more enriching. With her by my side, I feel empowered to take risks and embrace new opportunities, knowing that I have someone who wholeheartedly supports me every step of the way.
