We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sanchild a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sanchild, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I definitely get my resilience from my mother and my personal life experiences. I’ve seen my mother struggle and work so hard just to provide for children to the best of her ability. I continue to see the amount of effort she puts in to maintain her business and still take care of things in her personal life. That’s why it’s hard for me to pitch a tent if I’m unsatisfied with the results I get. I just keep working hard until I’m able to achieve my goals.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I go by the name Sanchild. I am a rapper, singer, and producer. I’m generally a chill person to be honest. I really enjoy music and not just creating but consuming it. What I want the world to know is that my brand is about trying to become a better version of yourself through ethics, health, consciousness, behavior, etc. My brand is also about having fun and not taking yourself too seriously all of the time. As I’ve said before, my story is continuously being written so I won’t claim to know or understand everything there is. I’m constantly learning just like the next person. I have a new project coming up soon that is produced by Billboard Charting Artist Homiletix. I’m excited for ya’ll to hear what we’re cooking up so stay tuned!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have been most impactful on my journey are staying focused, educating myself, and taking initiative. When I started making music I didn’t know everything I needed to become a rapper, singer, or producer. I took time to understand what qualities make you great in each aspect. Once I knew those qualities I started building the habits I need to become great at it, so I recommend other upcoming artists do the same. I believe you have to treat this craft like a sport. Just like an athlete you have to condition your body and put in hours to develop yourself.
The advice I’d give to someone who is starting out is to do your research. I think a lot of people who want to make music as a career have a misconception that being in the music industry means just making good music. You also have to understand the business aspect of the music industry unless you plan on being taken advantage of by labels. You don’t have to become a lawyer, but have a basic understanding of contractual law and also find someone who is a lawyer or studied contractual law to help guide you through the process of understanding contracts. I also advise artists to try to get different opinions on a contract. I say this because one person may catch things another won’t.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think it’s better that people dedicate the majority of their time to their strengths. If you already have a head start in excelling at something you should take advantage of that. Some people have to start at ground zero trying to acquire certain skillsets that you already have. If you’re a person who happens to excel in various activities then I don’t think there’s anything wrong with dedicating time to each one. However, if you’re a person who has apparent strengths but you try to over extend yourself by dabbling in various activities all at once, I feel like you’re stealing time to develop your strengths. Unless you’re a person with a lot of time and money.
