Meet Sandy

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sandy . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sandy below.

Sandy , we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Self care is extremely important these days . I dint realize the importance of it until recently. I was diagnosed with severe depression and PTSD after finding out I was sexually assaulted . After finding out what happened to me this has severely impacted me mentally and physically. Being in the public eye is really exhausting at times . So what I do when I know it’s time to take care of myself is shutting everything off . No social media No contact with the outside world. I like to read books , light up scented candles in my home as well as doing small activities that keep me distracted and feeling safe . I enjoy my walks with my little Bruno to keep my mind busy and relax.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was previously a podcaster doing small interviews and segments on YouTube. After my assault I dint have the heart to continue doing what I love to do . These days you wont see me doing podcasts but you will see me on social media advocating for sexual assault survivors like myself. It is an extremely hard topic to discuss but it’s important to bring awareness of what consent really means .
I want to show society how the criminal system really works. How to advocate for yourself and show people how there is recourses on getting help . I have recently become part of RAINN speakers Bureau . I want to educate my community on the importance of reporting your assault and reminding survivors that YOU MATTER & YOU ARE BELIEVED.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Willing to educate yourself on things you dint know but are willing to learn in order to understand.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Learning to love myself , learning to not care what anyone has to say or thinks of me anymore. Not letting anybody affect me or make me feel less of a human being because of what I have gone through. Growing thick skin . Knowing that not everything has to be perfect and taking my days slow (day by day ) .
