We were lucky to catch up with Sandy Martinez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sandy , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity has always been a fundamental part of who I am. It’s not just an activity for me; it’s a way of expressing myself and connecting with the world around me. I feel a natural urge to create, which keeps my creative spirit alive.
I find immense joy in creating with my hands, whether it’s making jewelry, crafting, painting, sculpting, or DIY projects. The act of taking an idea and making it into something physical brings me fulfillment.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the creator of Moonlit Crab. I make reiki infused crystal jewelry, sun catchers, clip wands and other items I intuitively feel called to make. My creativity thrives on intuition. I often find myself drawn to specific crystals, materials or designs, allowing my instincts to guide me. This intuitive process ensures that each piece I create resonates with my energy and the energies I feel around me.
Sharing my creations with a community that appreciates handmade, spiritually infused items is incredibly rewarding. The feedback and connections I make with customers and fellow creators inspire me to continue exploring new ideas and expanding my offerings.
I am also Market Manager and help with promotion of Witch-O-Rama Market, which is a monthly market in Blue Island Illinois. You can find me there February-December.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
What was most impactful for me in my journey was keeping myself engaged in creative activities, exposing myself to new experiences and always making time for me to create.
My advice to creatives like myself would be to follow your own intuition and passions no matter what anyone around you has to say. No matter how out there your idea might seem, follow your heart and work towards achieving it. You just have to start.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I grew up in Pilsen, in a single parent household. My mother worked a lot to support 5 children. The most impactful thing she did for me was to let me express myself through different activities such as piano classes, tap dancing, gymnastics, basketball, softball to name a few and many forms of art classes. She was always supportive of whatever ideas and new things I’d want to try. I’m so grateful for that part of my life. It wasn’t easy for me to express myself verbally, that’s something I’m still working on, but when it comes to the arts or hands on projects, that’s where I thrive. That’s my language.
