Meet Sandy V

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sandy V. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sandy below.

Hi Sandy, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I have been working on mental health/ self care more than I have recently. I am diagnosed with ADHD, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, and much more but i have found ways and remedies to help when those situations you feel you lost control, and that’s what I’ll talk about. 1. For me, riding a skateboard is probably the best and most therapeutic thing I can do, I have been skating since three years old and ever since stepping on a board, it has has some form of safety and comfort. I can’t explain my love for this sport but I can try. I made a quote about it, “Skating has become a powerful addiction but also my most preeminent therapy” Have you ever had a desire for something so strong, you felt addicted? That’s how I am on a board. I can’t walk 3 feet on the sidewalk without putting my board down to roll the distance. I love this sport. I don’t think there is anyone that can possibly keep me from achieving what I want to other than myself, and I realized that. That you are the only person who can really stop you from doing what you want so help yourself. Another thing i do is work on my breathing, deep breaths, patterns, whatever to help cool the thousands of thoughts swarming your head. these are thing I do for self care/ mental health.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I own Layback Skate Shack & Museum in San Diego. (@laybacksd) It is a mobile skate shop that i run out of my van that i also live in. The shop is all about community so if you ever see the Layback van and need some emergency parts feel free to hit me up! (we have donated shoes, clothes, skate parts, etc.) It’s a mostly used skate shop with about 150 boards ranging from the 50’s- Today i have been running layback some late last year, and it’s been growing.

Skating, what has it not done for me by this point? I can’t thank the sport enough for allowing me to have a impact in it in such a way, I try to dedicate 6 hours out of my day to be spent on the board. more recently in the past 2-3 months I have been waking up at 4AM and skating till 6-8AM go back to sleep to wake up and do it again. and I’ve noticed that consistency is key. it is needed to develop skill. I have been skating since I was 3. Now I may not have skated that whole duration, but it always had my back. Skating has been incredibly loyal to me and always finds its way back into my life. I can say confidently that I have skated more than I have walked in the past 4 years.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Making the effort Everybody will always say they want something so bad but will always be too scared or lazy to go after it, get off your ass and do something if you want it, you gotta get it.

2. Discipline/ Integrity
What are you doing when no one is watching or giving you attention?

3. No Limits, but it will end
No matter what people say or do to you, this is your life. You don’t get the time back you spent reading this, or that you spend complaining earlier, GO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
