We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara Carlo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Hi Sara, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I believe I gained my confidence and self esteem through messing up. I’ve had many doubts about myself and what I do, and why others are better at some things than me. But that’s kind of part of it all. You have to be able to sit back and reflect on what you’re doing and put the work in, to realize everything you’re doing is just as good as everyone else and just as deserving of recognition. It took me falling into a pit of low self esteem and depression to realize, that it’s just a mental change. Loving yourself, putting your needs first, those are hard things to do. Especially as a woman these days. It’s hard to not get triggered when making a mistake, or feeling anxious about what OTHER people are going to think about my projects. Over time I think it’s just about radical acceptance. I am not perfect, neither is anyone else. But by speaking to myself positively and putting thoughts into action instead of waiting on others to “approve” it, that’s how I’ve gained my own little bundle of confidence and self esteem. It’s mine and no-one else’s, and that helps. And leaning into what I’m curious about helps too.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an abstract artist and content producer on Pinterest from East Texas. I spend most of my time raising two kids with my husband, painting and working on various creative projects around the house. I am also in the Rockwall Art League. One of my long term goals is to open my own gallery eventually, towards the Fort Worth area, for more abstract artists to have a place to show. I am also consistently submitting to art shows around the area, just keep an eye out for my name!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Acceptance! And patience. And resilience. You will truly never know how far you can go if you just give up and quit. You must accept that your work will not please everyone, and it’s okay if your friends or family don’t agree with it/dislike it. There’s a great saying I heard from @tinx recently, “Everything you want is on the other side of cringe mountain”. In other words.. if it feels silly to do it, if it makes you worry about what others might think, but it makes you feel excited or giddy-just do it. Always trust your gut. You’ve got to lean into your curiosity and follow it through. Something great can be waiting on the other side.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for others to collaborate with. I’d really enjoy having an art community in East Texas for younger artists that are trying to break out. Most of the art groups in my area are not exactly looking to break out, get into a gallery etc. I would love to see an local arts building for artists to come in and work on projects, show their latest pieces and have events. I would also love to meet some local photographers that might be trying to break out-that would be interested in doing shoots for artists, to help promote each other, and other artists who might just want to collaborate ideas or do group shows. The further away from Fort Worth or Dallas you go, it’s more difficult to promote art in these small towns.
