Meet Sara Gorovits

We were lucky to catch up with Sara Gorovits recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sara, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I’ve been a visual artist for as long as I can remember, doing anything from children’s book illustrations and theatre costume designs, to commercial murals and commissioned paintings. When I had my kids, I decided to become a stay-at-home mom to spend more time with them, but I eventually dissolved into my family and household and completely lost myself. I was still trying to find inspiration to paint here and there, but sometimes went years without touching the canvas. Later down the line, when my sister was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, and I found out I had a high risk of getting it too, I decided to get a preventative bilateral mastectomy. This surgery ended up going horribly wrong, resulting in 12 more surgeries over the next 7 years. This, on top of a lonely and unhappy marriage, completely destroyed my self-confidence as a woman. After a long while, I started trying to build myself up again – one of the ways was by getting microblading done as a form of self-care. When I got my brows done, I immediately understood how important it was because of how much such a minor change boosted my confidence, and I wanted to give that to other women. I realized this could be a perfect craft for me because it was an organic combination of my love for people and my love for art. After opening my studio and seeing people’s reactions to their transformations on a daily basis, I finally found myself in my happy place.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I launched Tête-à-Tête in 2022, specializing in microblading and microshading—semi-permanent makeup techniques that create hyper-realistic brows with fine, manual hair strokes. Over time, I’ve naturally expanded into other treatments including eyeliner tattoos, lip pigmentation, scalp pigmentation, and areola tattoos. I also started offering fine-line tattoos, since I knew my space could provide a more relaxing, private experience for women of all ages, who might not feel comfortable going to a regular tattoo shop – and of course men are welcome too! A lot of my clients have said how surprised they were to find that the treatments were completely painless and even relaxing, so much so that a lot of them fall asleep (I don’t mind the snoring). This is something I really try to prioritize at Tête-à-Tête – beauty doesn’t have to be painful! What I think makes my work stand out is how I aim for the most natural look possible, while still giving my clients a huge transformation. The best compliment for me is when people tell my clients “Wow! You look so good, what did you do?”, but they can never pinpoint what it is until they tell them it’s the brows. I also designed and built my studio myself because I wanted to make sure it was a clean, boutique space with a fun and cozy vibe, where my clients can feel relaxed. Throughout their healing process, I personally check up on my clients to see how they’re doing, and I’m always there for them with any questions they may have. I’ve also found that many people don’t know about permanent makeup, so I offer free consultations and hold educational events at bridal expos and different women’s organizations, on top of networking events for other small businesses like mine. I’m excited to put a new spin on tattooing in the future by bringing a mobile approach to it, where I tattoo people at their own events or just parties at the studio!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Self-doubt is the biggest trap. By doubting yourself you’re holding yourself back from big things in your life. The moment you start believing in yourself and you allow yourself to dream big, everything will start happening for you and you’ll look back and say “Wow how did I even get here?”. Even 3 years ago I could never imagine I would be where I am now, and all it took is baby steps one day at a time and believing in myself. When I started I was a 47-year-old dinosaur – I didn’t even know what Tiktok is. And now, I create all the content for my social media by myself. If I can do it, anyone can do it! So for anybody who’s just starting out, your number one step is this: drop all of your baggage, all of your limiting beliefs about yourself, all of your fears, take a deep breath, start dreaming, and just go for it!!! Another quality that’s really important in any business is being genuine and passionate about what you do. Clients are just regular people and trust me – they can read you! If you really love what you do and you really care about the people you’re doing it for, it will show in your work and build trust. Word of mouth is your biggest advertisement, so just put your heart into your work and that will speak for you.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

In the past, I’ve provided discounted services for people with alopecia and those struggling with cancer because I know how much of an effect it can have on their self-confidence and overall well-being. I’m currently looking to expand into working with hospitals, women’s health centers, and plastic/reconstructive surgeons to be able to provide more patients with cosmetic tattooing treatments, so I would love to collaborate with anybody in these fields. This includes areola tattoos, scalp pigmentation for hair loss, scar-camouflaging, and of course, permanent facial makeup. When I’m not tattooing, I’m always painting something, so I’m also up for whatever fun creative projects come my way!
