We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara Jo Walker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara Jo below.
Hi Sara Jo, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my mom, Gloria Houghland. She’s always juggled multiple roles—teacher, realtor, and writer—and did so with a remarkably positive attitude. Watching her as a teacher, I saw firsthand the impact she had on her students’ lives, which was incredibly inspiring. As a single mother, she showed me that work is simply part of life, and you should approach it with purpose and pride.
She’s always encouraged me to give my best, to learn from my mistakes, and to treat everyone with kindness and respect. Those values have stayed with me throughout my career and continue to guide me today. While entrepreneurship wasn’t her path—and she was understandably a little nervous when I took the leap—it’s her lessons that gave me the confidence and resilience to pursue it.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the President and founder of Bright Hour Strategies, a public relations and strategic communications firm rooted in authenticity, creativity, and connection. We work with businesses, nonprofits, and individuals to help them tell their stories with impact—whether that’s launching a product, navigating a crisis, building a brand from the ground up, or strengthening relationships with media, stakeholders, and communities.
One rewarding thing about my job is that no two days are the same. One moment I’m prepping a client for a media interview, and the next I’m helping a nonprofit shape a campaign that will make a real difference in their community. I get to be both creative and strategic, and I’m constantly learning—about new industries, new people, and what really resonates with audiences. What I love most about this work is seeing the results. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a campaign take off, a message resonate, or a client light up because their story is finally being heard the right way. Happy clients and measurable impact—that’s what drives me.
Bright Hour is named after my family’s farm and one of my grandfather’s racehorses—it’s a reminder of where I come from and the values that guide this work: hard work, and heart. At the end of the day, I’m driven by a desire to help good people do meaningful work—and to make sure their voices are heard.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First, strong communication skills have been at the heart of everything I do. Whether it’s writing, pitching, listening, or problem-solving—being able to clearly and confidently articulate ideas opens doors. For anyone early in their journey, I’d say: practice your communication every chance you get. Write more, read more, have real conversations with people. It’s a muscle, and the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
Second, resilience. Things don’t always go the way you plan. Clients leave, deals fall through, things shift. But being able to adapt, learn, and keep going without losing your sense of purpose—that’s everything. Early on, it’s easy to take setbacks personally. My advice is to treat each challenge as a lesson, not a failure. There’s something valuable in every stumble.
And finally, relationships. So much of my work—and my growth—has come from staying connected. I’ve learned that success in PR isn’t just about having the right skills or expertise; it’s about building trust with clients, colleagues, and the media. Relationships are everything. My advice here is to listen more than you talk (not that I always do a great job at that) and approach every connection with authenticity. Build relationships not just for immediate gain, but for long-term value.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a series of bosses throughout my career who each played a critical role in helping me grow. Every single one challenged me to see things differently, pushed me to stretch beyond what I thought I was capable of, and gave me opportunities that shaped the communicator—and leader—I am today.
Some taught me the power of precision and preparation, others the importance of listening and empathy. A few pushed me to take risks, trust my instincts, and speak up even when it was uncomfortable.
What I appreciate most is that they didn’t just tell me what to do—they taught me how to think. That kind of mentorship, even when it comes in the form of tough feedback or high expectations, is invaluable. I carry those lessons with me every day.
