We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara McNally. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Sara , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Life has handed me a lot of challenges, both personally and professionally, that have built me up to who I am today. I have overcome each and every challenge with newfound confidence in myself, growth from the lesson learned, and the knowledge that no matter what cards I am dealt, I will ALWAYS triumph. Believing in yourself is the ultimate game-changer and will be the winning card that gives you everything you have ever wanted in life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
After years of being unhappy in whatever work profession I had chosen at that time, I finally decided to stop waiting for someone to hand me my career and went after my dreams. I am that success story we all hear about- if you follow your dreams and do what you are passionate about, you will never work another day in your life. IT IS SO TRUE. While I am on call 24/7, I am never working (in the sense we all know this word to mean).
I fell in love with real estate at a very young age. I can remember being obsessed with going inside someone’s home to see what the rooms looked like, how they lived, what stories were told inside those walls. I could geek out over a floorplan! As I got older, I was in awe of those people that were able to play REALTOR in real life! Oh, how I wish that was me!
In 2019 after years in dead end jobs with no sense of purpose or longevity, I decided to take a leap and go after what I had spent years thinking I could NEVER do. I was going to pursue a career in real estate and my only option was to SUCCEED. Failure wasn’t even in the cards. I had pushed myself in so many other avenues in life and made it through so why would this be any different. You know what I was doing? I was choosing to believe in MYSELF. <gasp!>
Fast forward 5 years later and I have made more money than I ever dreamed of. I have bought a home for myself and my children, I have paid off debt, I have created wealth, and most of all, I have created a sense of pride and joy within ME. On top of all that real estate has done for me, nothing beats what it has allowed me to do for others. I have helped countless families pursue their dreams of owning real estate whether through buying, selling, investing or building. I have traveled the path with first time homebuyers, long time investors, and families upsizing and downsizing. I have worked with multi-millionaires and young clients whose budgets are no larger than $200,000. They are all different experiences both each one has allowed me to put my passion for helping others together with my passion for real estate and I given me some of the deepest gratitude I have ever felt. </gasp!>
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say that the biggest qualities or skills that have helped me on this journey are my resilience to triumph in the face of adversity, my passionate for helping others, and my growth in believing in myself. That last one is the biggest one for sure. You can do anything you want, anything you crave, as long as you trust in yourself enough to be a success. Allow yourself to go after what you want and allow yourself to be damn good at it.
Real estate is a tough gig. It is absolutely NOT for the faint of heart. It is hard and stressful and frustrating and infuriating. But my goodness, it is rewarding and exciting and joyful and fulfilling. You have to have a strong sense of self in this line of work. You have to be in it for your clients, not the money. If you do it for the money, you will fail immediately. Real estate is about building and nurturing relationships. It is not about buying or selling houses to make a paycheck. The journey is so emotional for your clients and you have to be there for them in ways you never realized. Your relationship with your clients is very intimate and personal and you become their confidant during the experience. It is a wild ride!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Gosh, well this may sound a certain type of way but…ME. I have been my biggest influencer throughout this career. And I mean that in the most honest and genuine way.
There have been many people in my life that have helped me develop certain skills and qualities that have helped shape who I am today but it has truly be ME that has gotten me where I am today. I have rode quite the roller coaster in life and it has always been ME that has showed up for ME. I have gotten myself to this place at this moment. I choose to believe in myself every single time that I thought I wasn’t good enough or could not do it or was afraid. Every single time, I picked myself up and made it happen. From graduating from college with two degrees to raising two boys on my own to buying two homes for my family to making the leap into a commission-only career that has no safety net of a base salary. I have been the one.
