We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara Mizrachi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Sara, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
My sense of self expression has always been to make things with my hands. I have loved making jewelry for nearly my entire life!
For me, my creativity comes from shapes, colors and textures, specifically of things found in nature (gemstones, metals, flowers, leaves…), These inspire me into designing patterns of geometric and organic elements to create unique pieces of jewelry.
For me this process of observing nature and my everyday environment for inspiration can be really fruitful or challenging, but I find that taking pressure off of the creating/designing process helps me keep my creativity flowing and I typically find a solution for my designs.
You need those brain breaks for sure!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I design and create jewelry and what I love about my brand is my product promise, which really expresses my style and purpose. I make simple statement pieces that balance and combine organic and geometric elements including gemstones, brass and other metals like sterling silver and gold filled to create jewelry that really takes any outfit to the next level and can be worn with everyday and formal ensembles.
I love making it easy for people to accessorize themselves and offering styles that take the pressure and overthinking out of the picture of outfit planning.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I know this may sound familiar, but flexible thinking, creative problem solving and being open to criticisms are NECESSARY to being a successful small business owner.
Seeing what customers gravitate to when it comes to colors, price points, type of jewelry; earrings vs. necklaces, rings vs. bracelets, being really observant has helped me be self aware of changes I needed to make in my designs; simplifying them and also adding some geometric edginess(which I am head over heels about) that have helped me stand out and also helped my budget!
Owning a small business is about the long haul so you have to have an open mind! And you’ll have to be okay with taking on the boring administrative tasks which will actually indirectly help the creative process by making financial decisions and making you treat your time more seriously and realizing you need to spread your focus, not just constantly create.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love to collaborate with store owners, small business owners and anyone who appreciates artisans and their work. I am excited to share my wholesale Faire shop, www.faire.com/direct/sarasselajewelry as well as my IG account @saraselajewelry and I am always happy to take custom orders for both consumers and retailers. I basically enjoy creating and problem solving with clients, it brings me a special joy when we settle on that final design!
Of course I do have Etsy, www.etsy.com/shop/saraselajewelry and my home site www.sarasela.com and you can do a deep dive into my designs.
